Kamara scores 100th goal as Whitecaps beat Dynamo
HOUSTON — As much as Kei Kamara appreciated reaching the 100-goal milestone in MLS play on Saturday, he was happier to help his team earn three points.
Kamara scored his 100th regular-season goal, Brek Shea had the go-ahead score early in the second half and the Vancouver Whitecaps beat the Houston Dynamo 2-1 on Saturday night.
"It’s an honour to really be playing for the Whitecaps now and reaching this milestone for this club," said Kamara, who was playing in his 300th regular-season MLS game. "Not just that, I’m playing against one of the teams I used to play with with the Dynamo.
"We were able to get three points tonight so not just the goal or the milestone, it’s a big game so it was good."
Shea scored on a breakaway goal in the 49th minute after he was sprung free by Kamara’s pass up the left channel.
Kamara gave Vancouver (2-0-0) the early lead with a penalty kick in the 28th minute. He drew the penalty when he was pushed down in the box by Philippe Senderos. Kamara has scored twice in as many games.
Kamara said that the only milestone he’s after now is winning his first MLS Cup.
"One thing that’s not under my belt is a championship ring," Kamara said. "That’s the focus, that’s what I’m playing for right now and hopefully I’m able to get to that pretty soon."
Alberth Elis drilled a right-footed blast past Stefan Marinovic to even the score for Houston (1-1-0) in the 39th minute.
