Manchester United’s season descends into another pity party under Mourinho

Sportsnet.ca
Manchester United’s season descends into another pity party under Mourinho
Manchester United’s season descends into another pity party under Mourinho
MANCHESTER, ENGLAND – The world Jose Mourinho inhabits is one he no longer recognises. Manchester United's manager refuses to evolve from a not-so-distant past when he was both adored and feared in equal measure. Often existing in a personal bubble which blends arrogance and self-pity in equal measure, he can no longer hide behind that approach after his side eked out a goalless draw with Southampton on Saturday. Mourinho is living proof of the adage that the more things change, the more they stay the same. No matter the outcome – win, lose or draw – his lament always finds a way of stealing focus. It is what he does best. A calendar year in which he delivered two major honours at Old Trafford, one of them ensuring Champions League qualification on merit rather than a coefficient quota, has descended into another season-long pity party. https://twitter.com/RichardBuxton_/status/947130252748259328 Spending £261 million is apparently “not enough” to overhaul Manchester City's growing superiority, which could see the lead over their local rivals at the Premier League summit extended to 16 points before 2018 even arrives. United have also moved down to third in the table, one point behind Chelsea and now have Liverpool breathing down their neck with only three points separating the protagonists of the North West's greatest feud. But Mourinho is more than familiar with the odds that have been stacked in favour of a select few in the Premier League. He was once a part of it; leading a well-oiled Chelsea side to the title three times, twice with an eight-point margin and once with 12. But where Pep Guardiola obliterates records, the Portuguese coach prefers to play the same ones on a continuous loop. Excuses are made freely and often, even where equilibrium exists. What legitimate complaints were to be had when Southampton’s Maya Yoshida handled the ball in his penalty area under pressure from Jesse Lingard were offset by Ashley Young elbowing Dusan Tadic in the stomach from a corner kick. Invariably, Mourinho disagreed. "A very good referee, one of the most promising young referees not just in England and Europe too, had a very bad decision that punished us," he said post-match. "Then the game was about us trying, and missing some important chances and always trying to create, always trying to play and [Southampton] trying their chance in an isolated counter-attack where they had one very good chance that David (De Gea) saved. "We kept trying with what we have in this moment so I think we deserved to win the match." https://twitter.com/RichardBuxton_/status/947163687281987584 United fans are already growing immune to Mourinho's charms as his trend of three-year cycles at clubs shows no signs of being bucked. They had already become disenfranchised with his brand of football, epitomised by a chorus of boos that greeted the half-time and final whistles, and desperate pleas of “attack, attack, attack!” from the Stretford End late in the second half. Pockets of empty seats were also visible across the stadium long before referee Craig Pawson called time on a largely forgettable game. Mourinho previously insisted that United could not afford Romelu Lukaku any much-needed respite after playing every single Premier League minute this season. They will have to learn to function without him after a nasty clash of heads with Wesley Hoedt saw him stretchered off wearing both a neck brace and oxygen mask. In the Belgian's absence, they lacked an outlet from open play. A flurry of lofted balls into the penalty area rarely found a United shirt, with the intended target had long been removed from action. More than laborious tactics undid United's hopes of avoiding their third successive stalemate in the space of seven days. Paul Pogba was flagged offside when he turned in Nemanja Matic's bobbling shot at the near post. Replays showed that the goal-bound effort did not even require the France international's touch. They also owed a debt of gratitude to David de Gea, who denied what clear-cut chances the visitors fashioned. Southampton's prospects without Virgil van Dijk already appear more promising. Some 33 miles west of Old Trafford, the outgoing defender was preparing himself for life at Liverpool by taking in their win over Leicester City earlier in the day. Anfield’s gain will not even be the Saints’ loss with the Dutchman's prolonged departure triggering five months of relative disruption on the English coast. News of his exit, announced barely 24 hours after a 5-2 humiliation at Tottenham appears to have galvanised Mauricio Pellegrino's side. The Argentine wielded the axe on goalkeeper Fraser Forster in the wake of that Boxing Day hammering, handing Alex McCarthy a first-ever league outing for the club in two seasons. It was a gamble which paid off as Southampton kept their first clean sheet in 12 games. Such had been the low bar of expectations that chants of “ole!” emanated from the away section whenever their team strung together a succession of passes. But this may represent a major turning point for Pellegrino when his side's humiliation at Tottenham had left him staring into the abyss. https://twitter.com/RichardBuxton_/status/947188441095311363 “Without Virgil now, we have to think about the future, try to bring to the squad a couple of targets to try to improve our squad – to be stronger," Pellegrino said. "In six months or one year's time, maybe we can talk about if to sell Virgil was positive or not. "But on this, we have to wait." Salah stars in Liverpool comeback; Chelsea thrashes Stoke
Mohamed Salah kept up his stunning form in his debut season for Liverpool, scoring twice in its come-from-behind 2-1 win over Leicester in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Egypt forward responded to Jamie Vardy's third-minute opener at Anfield to score in the 52nd and 76th minutes and take his tally in all competitions to 23 goals, with his 17 in the league leaving him one behind top scorer Harry Kane.

Chelsea, another team fighting for a finish in the Champions League qualification positions, had it much easier in a 5-0 victory over a depleted Stoke side at Stamford Bridge.

With Manchester City running away with the title, the focus for the second half of the season might be the chase to finish in the top four. Chelsea and Liverpool are currently in that chase, alongside Manchester United, which hosts Southampton in the late game and will look to regain second place from Chelsea.

Bournemouth and Swansea, managed for the first time by Carlos Carvalhal, both scored late goals to secure 2-1 wins over Everton and Watford, respectively. Newcastle and Brighton drew 0-0, as did Huddersfield and Burnley.

Leon Britton to fill in as Swansea player-manager

Leon Britton to fill in as Swansea player-manager
SWANSEA, Wales -- Player-coach Leon Britton will take charge of Swansea for its Premier League match against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The Welsh club is searching for a replacement for manager Paul Clement, who was fired on Thursday with the team in last place near the midway point of the season.

The 35-year-old Britton, who has been a midfielder for Swansea for the last 15 years, joined the coaching staff last month.

He said he doesn't want to take the job on a full-time basis.

"It is not to say I wouldn't take it in the future, but I just think at this moment in time it is not the right move for me," Britton said Friday. "I've been asked to help the club out, which is something I will always do. But in terms of the immediate future, I am not looking to be the full-time manager."

Former Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs applied for a vacancy at Swansea last year, losing out to Bob Bradley -- the predecessor to Clement.

Giggs, who played for Wales, said Friday he wasn't interested in replacing Clement.

Swansea has lost all but two of its last 10 league games and is four points from safety.

ZURICH -- FIFA has suspended Brazilian soccer federation president Marco Polo del Nero for 90 days while he is under an ethics investigation.

FIFA says Del Nero has been provisionally banned from all soccer activities as formal ethics investigation proceedings are conducted.

Del Nero fled Zurich in May 2015 when FIFA colleagues were arrested, quit the executive committee of soccer's governing body after missing meetings and was then indicted in the United States in December 2015. He has not been extradited from Brazil to face the charges.

Kadeisha Buchanan named Canadian female soccer player of the year

Sportsnet.ca
Kadeisha Buchanan named Canadian female soccer player of the year
Kadeisha Buchanan named Canadian female soccer player of the year
TORONTO -- Defender Kadeisha Buchanan capped a remarkable campaign overseas Thursday with a domestic triumph, earning Canadian female soccer player of the year honours for the second time in three years.

The 22-year-old from Brampton, Ont., became the first Canadian international to hoist the Champions League trophy in June when Lyon defeated Paris Saint-Germain 7-6 in a penalty shootout in the final of European women's club soccer showcase.

"An experience I'll never forget," said Buchanan.

Lyon, which had already captured the French league title and Cup, won the treble for the second year in a row.

Buchanan, who has already won a staggering 72 caps for Canada, has welcomed playing at the highest club level. Combining athleticism and a hard physical edge, the young Canadian has become one of the world's elite centre backs.

"There's many great players and every day they push me to be a better me," Buchanan said in an interview. "And I think I push the team as well.

"So every day it's like an international match because there are so many international players on the team. So definitely it's challenging but it's a challenge I want every day."

On Wednesday, Beskitas midfielder Atiba Hutchinson was named male player of the year for a record sixth time.

Buchanan edged Christine Sinclair, who won last year for the 13th time, for the Canadian award. Buchanan also won in 2015, ending Sinclair's 11-year stranglehold on the women's honour. Sinclair also won in 2000.

Fellow Canadian internationals Ashley Lawrence, Janine Beckie and Jessie Fleming were also top vote-getters among Canadian coaches and media.

"It has been an amazing year for Kadeisha with the club treble as she has achieved in her first year in France what many players wait a lifetime to achieve," Canadian national team coach John Herdman said in a statement.

"She also was a key player for Canada in two home matches against Costa Rica in which she played very well in June and then again in November as Canada beat Norway for the first time. It was just another great year for Kadeisha."

Buchanan started the year on a high, joining Sinclair in January as the only Canadian woman to win MAC Hermann Trophy as the top NCAA soccer player.

Just days later, she signed with French powerhouse Lyon. Lawrence, her childhood friend, had just signed with rival Paris Saint-Germain.

The two would tangle all season as PSG and Lyon battled for domestic honours.

Buchanan made nine appearances for Canada in 2017, notching seven wins.

Buchanan and Lyon continue their success. The club is through to the quarterfinals for this season's Champions League, set to play FC Barcelona when the competition resumes in March.

And it tops the French standings with an 11-0-0 record.

Earlier this week Fleming and Kris Twardek were named Canada's U-20 players of the year, marking the third straight win for Fleming. Alphonso Davies and Jordyn Huitema won U-17 honours.

Hope Solo is running for president of U.S. Soccer Federation

Sportsnet.ca
Hope Solo is running for president of U.S. Soccer Federation
Hope Solo is running for president of U.S. Soccer Federation

Hope Solo is running for president of the U.S. Soccer Federation.

The former U.S. Olympic and World Cup goalkeeper announced her candidacy Thursday night on Facebook. It comes less than a week after current U.S. Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati said he will not seek a fourth term. His decision came in the wake of the recent failure of the U.S. men’s team to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

The 36-year-old Solo anchored the U.S. team in goal during its 2015 Women’s World Cup championship run.

"I know exactly what U.S. Soccer needs to do, I know exactly how to do it, and I possess the fortitude to get it done," Solo said in her post. "I have always been willing to sacrifice for what I believe in and I believe there is no greater sacrifice then fighting for equal opportunity, integrity and honesty, especially in an organization like the USSF that could give so much more to our communities across the nation."

She brings a crowded field to nine candidates. She is the second woman to announce a bid for the job, joining Soccer United Marketing President Kathy Carter.

Her tenure with the national team ended following the Rio Olympics, when the Americans were ousted by Sweden in the quarterfinals. Afterward, Solo called the Swedish team "cowards" for their defensive style of play.

She was suspended from the team shortly thereafter and has not returned. Solo made 202 total appearances with the national team, with 153 wins and an international-record 102 shutouts.

She’s also been dogged by several off-the-field controversies. Those include a domestic violence case stemming from a 2014 altercation at a family member’s home in Washington state.

Other U.S. Soccer Federation candidates include former national team players Paul Caligiuri, Eric Wynalda and Kyle Martino. They’re joined by USSF vice-president Carlos Cordeiro, Boston lawyer Steve Gans, New York lawyer Michael Winograd and Paul LaPointe, Northeast Conference manager of the United Premier Soccer League.

The election will be held in February.

Solo said she is campaigning on four core principles: to create a winning culture in U.S. Soccer, starting with youth development; to push for equal pay for the women’s national team and all women within U.S. Soccer; to address the "pay-to-play" model and make soccer accessible to all; and stress transparency within the federation.

"What we have lost in America is belief in our system, in our coaches, in our talent pool, and in the governance of US Soccer," she said. "We now must refocus our goals and come together as a soccer community to bring about the changes we desire."

The 58-year-old Gulati had been a driving force in the USSF for more than 30 years. During that time, the U.S. won the women’s World Cup in 1991, 1999 and 2015. He helped put together the successful bid that brought the 1994 World Cup to the U.S. and served as executive vice-president and chief international officer of the U.S. organizers for the tournament.

He was deputy commissioner of Major League Soccer from its launch until 1999; and president of Kraft Soccer Properties, which operates the New England Revolution of MLS.

Gulati was a unanimous pick in March 2006 to succeed Bob Contiguglia, who served two terms. Gulati replaced Chuck Blazer on FIFA’s executive committee in 2013 and continues to serve on the renamed FIFA council. He also is chairman of the joint U.S-Mexico-Canada bid committee, hoping FIFA will pick North America to host the 2026 World Cup.
