TFC takes care of business against Colorado in Champions League
• Colorado Rapids 0, Toronto FC 0
• Toronto wins Champions League series 2-0 on aggregate
• TFC hosts 1st leg of quarter-finals versus Tigres next Wednesday.

TORONTO – Champions take nothing for granted. That’s been the mantra of Toronto FC in the build-up to the 2018 Major League Soccer season.

So, it wasn’t at all a surprise when Toronto’s starting lineup came out an hour before kickoff of Tuesday’s CONCACAF Champions League match versus the Colorado Rapids.

TFC coach Greg Vanney opted to use the exact same “A team” as last week’s 2-0 road win in Colorado, a sign of just how serious he was taking the second leg of this Round of 16 series, even with a two-goal advantage. Vanney could have rotated his squad, confident in the fact TFC was essentially through to the next round, while giving key starters some rest ahead of this weekend’s MLS season opener. Instead, he fielded the strongest side possible. Never let up. Toronto didn’t.

Exactly 80 days removed from its MLS Cup victory, TFC returned to BMO Field for the first time and earned a hard-fought 0-0 draw against the Rapids before 23,383 fans to move on to the quarter-finals where it will play Mexican club Tigres.

Vanney trotted out his best possible starting 11 to send a statement, but it was also about giving his top players some extra game time to gel. While the Reds are still in pre-season mode, Tigres is in the middle of its domestic campaign in Mexico.

“If you have any desire to win this tournament, and you’re an MLS team, you need every minute you can to get your guys on the field and try to get in sync with each other, and try to get some experiences together that you can build on. … Tigres is already sharp and already have a lot of things worked out. We can’t rest guys right now,” Vanney explained

With a new coach and plenty of roster turnover in the off-season, the Rapids are a team in transition. Truth be told, they’re not much of a test for TFC; they’re exactly the kind of side Toronto should beat, although to its credit, Colorado did give the hosts a tough time of it. You can only play the team in front of you, and while the Reds easily dispatched the Rapids over the two legs, they can expect a far more difficult challenge against Tigres, one of the top teams from Mexico.

“We understand as we move forward in [the Champions League] that you have to play better because you come across better opponents. That’s understood,” Vanney stated.

While last week’s win in Denver featured a dominant performance from Toronto, this was a professional effort from the MLS Cup champs, more pragmatic than awe-inspiring. Colorado coach Anthony Hudson heralded his team’s effort, stating the Rapids were the better side for 50 or 60 minutes of Tuesday’s contest. Vanney was quick to remind his counterpart that this was a 180-minute series, and what matters is who was the better side over two games. You don’t get merit points.

“The problem is when you lose the first leg 2-0, you’re already losing, so I don’t know why it matters. At the end of the day, our job was to go through, and we did that,” Vanney said.

New Spanish playmaker Ager Aketxe started on the bench, but made his TFC debut when he came on as a substitute in the second half. Dutch fullback Gregory van der Wiel, another recent addition, was still on paternity leave – his wife gave birth on the weekend.

Toronto withstood some early pressure from Colorado, which successfully clogged the middle of the pitch, before carving out scoring opportunities via Sebastian Giovinco and Justin Morrow. Both had clean looks on goal from inside the penalty area, only to push their shots wide. It was the Rapids who came closest to scoring in the opening half, though, when Dominique Badji slipped in behind the defence and slammed his shot from the edge of the box off the post.

TFC goalkeeper Alex Bono was called into action after the restart, diving to his right to tip Enzo Martinez’ angled attempt out of danger. A knuckle-ball free kick from Giovinco forced Zac MacMath to make an unorthodox save.

MacMath came up big when he made a terrific stop late in the game to deny Toronto defender Drew Moor of a goal off a corner kick.

NOTES: Toronto FC now faces a short turnaround to get ready for the start of the MLS regular season. For the first time in franchise history, TFC will begin the MLS campaign at home when it hosts the Columbus Crew in its season opener on March 3. The Reds then enjoy a bye week, and they’ll travel to Montreal to take on the Impact on March 17 in Week 3. Back-to-back home games against Real Salt Lake and D.C. United follow their trip to Montreal.

CONCACAF Gold Cup wil expand to 16 nations in 2019

MIAMI — The CONCACAF Gold Cup will expand from 12 nations to 16 for the next edition in 2019.

The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football also said Monday it will explore holding the 2019 tournament outside of the United States, possibly with some games in Central America and the Caribbean.

CONCACAF started the Gold Cup in 1991, and 11 of the 14 tournaments have been played entirely in the U.S. Two have been shared by the U.S. and Mexico, and one by the U.S. and Canada.

The U.S. is the defending champion after winning its sixth regional title last year. Mexico has seven championships and Canada won in 2000.

The 2019 tournament figures to be the first significant test for the next U.S. coach. Bruce Arena quit in October after the U.S. failed to qualify for this year’s World Cup, ending a streak of seven straight appearances in soccer’s showcase.

CONCACAF said it will announce the Gold Cup qualifying process on March 7, when it reveals details of a Nations League tournament.

Strasbourg and Montpellier draw in French league

STRASBOURG, France — Montpellier’s defence held out again in a 0-0 draw at Strasbourg in the French league on Friday.

Montpellier has the second best defence in the league, with only 21 goals conceded in 27 games, and was rarely threatened by a subdued home side.

Instead, Montpellier could have won the game but striker Giovanni Sio’s coolly taken lob in the 84th minute was ruled out for offside. Replays showed he was onside when he made his initial run.

Montpellier moved into fifth place while Strasbourg was 14th.

League leader Paris Saint-Germain hosts third-place Marseille on Sunday.

With no World Cup this summer, where does Canada’s U-20 team go from here?

Sportsnet.ca
With no World Cup this summer, where does Canada’s U-20 team go from here?
With no World Cup this summer, where does Canada’s U-20 team go from here?

A busy 2018 has already begun for the Canadian women’s soccer program.

In late January, Canada failed to qualify for this summer’s FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after losing a knockout game to Haiti at the CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championship in Trinidad and Tobago.

Coach Bev Priestman says that disappointment is now providing a crucial learning opportunity for her young group and the entire Canadian developmental pathway. Priestman oversees much of the country’s program, not only as the EXCEL director but also as coach of the U-17 and U-20 teams, while also working as an assistant with the women’s senior team beside new coach Kenneth Heiner-Møller.

Her upcoming schedule is a busy one: the senior side is taking part in the Algarve Cup in Portugal starting Feb. 28, and the CONCACAF U-17 Women’s Championship is slated for April in Nicaragua.

Priestman chatted with Sportsnet about what lessons were learned from the recent U-20 tournament and what’s on the horizon for the EXCEL program.

What are your takeaways from the CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championship?
If I talk personally and emotionally, I’m obviously gutted for the girls because they didn’t qualify. I’ve been with a lot of those players now over a five-year period, taking them early, some in 2014. On a personal level, they don’t get to go to a World Cup, but take that emotion out of it, I think, [there are] some positives and some things to learn from. Overall, and you’ll see that as spectators, the top four teams, there was very limited goals scored and there was just one game in the knockout round that was done in 90 minutes of play.

I think it did reflect how tight it is actually becoming at the CONCACAF level, which can only help us in the long-term. The short-term is that particular group doesn’t get to go to a World Cup. I think we were one of the youngest teams there in terms of median age. I think that’s a reflection of what we are about, which is [developing young players for] the women’s national team.

I think also Deanne [Rose] and Jessie [Fleming] weren’t there … we chose to take some younger players that we feel long-term have what it takes to play for the women’s national team.

It was a young team and now those seven players will get to go play for the U-17s in the [upcoming CONCACAF U-17 tournament]. This experience is only going to help them in their journey and they’ll bring that hunger to want to qualify in that particular group and they’ll never take qualifying for granted in the future, that’s for sure.

On the positive side, Canada won its group, and Jordyn Huitema led the tournament in scoring.
We had a great group stage. Jordyn Huitema might be a U-20 player on paper, but she’s a U-17 player, she goes and gets the Golden Boot. That’s only going to bode well for her and her women’s national team career. She got to experience some adversity in the sense that when you’re a leading goal scorer, you get marked; youth teams are targeting her when she’s playing against them and maybe when she’s playing on the senior level now at the age of 17, she won’t experience that. That’s a massive positive to take forward for some of the individuals in that particular group.

As you mentioned, the U-20 roster was young (average age 18.2). After the defeat to Haiti, what advice did you give them to move forward?
There were a couple of messages. One of the messages was to use this one result, if you look at it objectively, use this hurt you’re feeling right now, which is what they were on the day, to drive you to be better every day in your own environment. Because 11 of those girls get to go again, and for those that don’t get to go again, as Canada Soccer, our job is to review this tournament, review performances, because at the end, for us is who do we feel can go on now or in the next four years and represent Canada at the senior level.

There were individual learnings and developments to drive that group of players forward and for the U-17s, it was about bringing their massive experiences to a very young group and it was their first CONCACAF tournament. There are some things you learn in tournaments around heat, recovery, all the styles of play. You bring those experiences to this group that you’ll be joining in two months.

Did the result in Trinidad given you any pause in thought about the value of the residency program? Should any adjustments be made to the pathway?
Structurally, I think the super-centre and the players that were there, it’s a very young concept. For us to reflect on it structurally, we look maybe four years in advance to look at it that way. Of course, I think when you finish a tournament your biggest job as a system is to reflect and review the curriculum content, etcetera. I think that’s part of the job. We have a great opportunity in the sense of two big tournaments in the first quarter of this year and as we do after every tournament, whether we win, whether we qualify, we implement the daily curriculum. That’s our ‘X-factor’ of having such an aligned program. That, for sure, will see those U-17 players implemented as of now in their current centres are preparing themselves to play in CONCACAF again.

So, system and structure, for sure we know, because we see a lot of players that were at that tournament early were because they are being pushed being with better players in a concentrated environment. That’s the reason they were even at the tournament. The structure, the learnings, whether we win, we lose, we feed that into our system.

How are preparations going for the upcoming U-17 tournament?
After the Algarve Cup with the senior team, we have a camp and the preparation camp will see all of the players come together, the U-17s. Most of those players are operating across our three centres: Vancouver, Ontario and Quebec. Those girls will be ramping up to that tournament mindset. They’ll be working on the way we want to play. That’s part of the alignment. I’m excited because at the U-17 level there are always people who jump up in tournaments that really stand up in moments and that’s the exciting part with a fresh group of faces who are new to CONCACAF.

When you look at the players in the residency program, is there a positional area of depth that stands out?
I would say it’s actually quite balanced. You could argue a couple of years ago it was always those midfield technicians, even if you just look at that U-20 group, the young players that have relocated. I would say that across the board we have profiles of what we are looking for and I would say we’re starting to tick across the pitch and who emerges at the right time when they are most ready.

And how are things for you? With John Herdman moving over to the men’s program, are you transitioning well with any new responsibilities?
You can look at change as a really exciting thing. Although it’s change, there’s massive consistency and I think for anyone in the system when John was with the women’s game, the good thing for everyone was the consistency. I worked under John in Canada for five years, Kenneth [Heiner-Møller] for the last two. That’s part of the appointment process, to make sure the consistency is there and I think with my role, what I’m doing more so is that I’m always doing the system. I’m continuing with that. I’ve got a greater connection and touching point in all of the senior team. I’m busy, but I’m excited to keep things going in a positive direction with John just moving onto the other side of the program.

Champions League takeaways: A titanic tussle in Turin

Here’s what happened in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, in case you missed it…

READ ALL ABOUT IT

Juventus 2, Tottenham 2: Match report || Scoresheet
Basel 0, Manchester City 4: Match report || Scoresheet

WHAT STOOD OUT

A titanic tussle in Turin
What looked like was going to be a complete whitewash after only a few minutes – and appeared as though the two-legged, round of 16 series was essentially over – turned out to be an incredibly entertaining affair between Juventus and Tottenham in Turin, setting up an enticing return match in London on March 7.

The Serie A champions came out flying, with Gonzalo Higuain netting a brace in the opening nine minutes, including a sweet volley off a set piece that Spurs looked clueless in defending. Tottenham, though, would not be denied, as they quickly settled down and bossed the game in midfield, dominating possession, and taking advantage of Juventus uncharacteristically dropping back deep to defend.

Harry Kane’s goal on the 35-miute mark gave the Premier League club a lifeline, only for Juventus to earn a second penalty just before half. This time, Higuain could not convert, rattling his effort off the crossbar. That set the stage for Christian Eriksen’s heroics, with the Dane scoring on a cheeky free kick in the second half to tie the match.

While questions must be raised about the Italian outfit’s tactics (they were far too passive and showed their opponents too much respect), full credit must be given to Tottenham for not only staying in the game at 2-0 down, but the way in which they wrestled control away from Juventus on their home turf. On the balance of play, Spurs were the better side, and showed great spirit on the night to earn a marvelous result in Italy.

“We could’ve folded when 2-0 down away from home at this stage of the Champions League, big stage, but it just shows the character of the squad,” Kane told BT Sport after the match.

BEST MOMENT OF THE DAY

BEST GOAL OF THE DAY

Higuain’s opener was a sweet volley, but Ilkay Gundogan’s second for Manchester City was even better. The German took a pass from Sergio Aguero, glided towards a crowded penalty area, and curled his shot home after giving a Basel defender the slip. Sublime!

BEST TWEET OF THE DAY

“Let’s believe,” decried Juventus fans in this brilliant tifo display prior to kickoff in Turin:

THE GAME WITHIN THE GAME

Christian Eriksen was sensational on the night, using his ball-retention skills to bring teammates into the play, and playing a number of dangerous passes. Moussa Dembele’s contribution on the night should not be overlooked, though. The Frenchman was outstanding at both ends of the pitch, and played a pivotal role in Tottenham being able to dominate possession.

SIX PACK OF STATS

• Gonzalo Higuain’s brace was the fastest scored by a Juventus player in Champions League/European Cup history (nine minutes).
• Harry Kane has equalled the record for the most goals scored by an English player in a single Champions League campaign (seven), tied with Steven Gerrard in 2008-09.
• Prior to Harry Kane’s goal, Gianluigi Buffon had not conceded in 694 consecutive minutes of action for Juventus and Italy.
• Manchester City have already won more games this season in all competitions (34) than they did in all of the 2016-17 campaign (33).
• Juventus have conceded two goals in a home Champions League game for the first time since February 2016 (2-2 against FC Bayern Munich).
• Harry Kane has scored more goals in his first nine Champions League appearances (nine) than any player in the history of the competition.
Stats courtesy of Opta

THREE STARS

1) Christian Eriksen, Tottenham: A masterful performance from the Dane, who pulled the creative strings and scored the equalizer for Spurs.
2) Gonzalo Higuain, Juventus: Scored a pair of goals and was a constant thorn in Tottenham’s side, especially with his runs off the ball.
3) Ilkay Gundogan, Manchester City: Lots of Man City candidates to choose from, but the nod goes to the German who bagged a brace.

Di Maria scores hat trick, Alves in goal in PSG cup win

Sportsnet.ca
Di Maria scores hat trick, Alves in goal in PSG cup win
Di Maria scores hat trick, Alves in goal in PSG cup win

PARIS — Angel Di Maria scored a hat trick and teammate Dani Alves had a short stint in goal as French Cup holder Paris Saint-Germain eased into the quarterfinals with a 4-1 win away to Sochaux on Tuesday.

The odd sight of Alves in goal happened when Kevin Trapp was sent off in the last minute of injury time for committing a cynical foul on the edge of the penalty area.

PSG had used its three substitutes, so after a few moments of deliberation the gloves were handed to a startled-looking Alves, who has forged a stellar career over the past decade as one of the world’s best right backs. His goalkeeping career lasted 10 seconds as Sochaux’s free kick hit the wall and the referee then blew the final whistle.

PSG was ruthless up front, even without the rested Neymar. With Di Maria in sparkling form — albeit against a second division side — he was not needed. Nine of Di Maria’s 13 goals this season have come since January, and he is making a case for starting against former club Real Madrid in the Last 16 of the Champions League next Wednesday.

Neymar was left out by coach Unai Emery. The Brazil star, who just turned 26, hosted a lavish birthday party on Sunday night. Videos of the players partying late — less than 48 hours before the game — circulated on social media. That drew the ire of Sochaux captain Florian Tardieu, who said it showed a lack of respect toward his team.

It was Tardieu who lost the ball in midfield when PSG scored in the first minute. Julian Draxler won it and fed Kylian Mbappe, whose cross was headed in by Di Maria.

Sochaux equalized through midfielder Florian Martin, following a mix-up in PSG’s defence, but Edinson Cavani slid in at the back post to make it 2-1 in the 27th minute.

Midfielder Marco Verratti created the third in the 59th, swapping passes with Draxler before feeding Di Maria, who curled a neat shot into the bottom right corner. Moments later, the Argentina winger flicked the ball in with the side of his foot after Cavani’s saved shot fell into his path.

Meanwhile, there were two other hat tricks as Marseille won 9-0 win away to second-division Bourg-en-Bresse.

Marseille scored six on Friday in the league against Metz and raced into a 5-0 lead at halftime, with goals from midfielders Luiz Gustavo and Dimitri Payet, winger Lucas Ocampos and two from striker Kostas Mitroglou.

Ocampos and Mitroglou completed their hat tricks after the break and forward Clinton NJie added a late penalty.

Also, third-division Les Herbiers won 3-0 away at second-division Auxerre.

Lyon is away to Montpellier in Wednesday’s matches.
