Source: Turkey’s Besiktas strikes deal with MLS for Canada’s Cyle Larin

Source: Turkey’s Besiktas strikes deal with MLS for Canada’s Cyle Larin

Turkey’s Besiktas has reached a deal with Major League Soccer to acquire Canadian striker Cyle Larin from Orlando City SC.

A source said the transfer could be announced as early as Tuesday. Orlando, however, declined comment.

The 22-year-old from Brampton, Ont., made no secret after last season that he wants to test his skills in Europe, only to find himself in a tug-of-war when MLS said that Larin was under contract with Orlando City through 2019.

The Turkish champion ramped up the stakes in mid-January by tweeting photos of Larin giving a thumbs-up in a Besiktas jersey and in the midst of what looked like a medical.

"Negotiations on for signing Canadian striker Cyle Larin as he undergoes physical," the club said on its English Twitter feed.

Video of what looked like Larin training with the Turkish team also surfaced on social media.

Orlando City responded via a terse statement.

"The club has not agreed to terms on a transfer of Larin and will take all necessary action against Besiktas in response to the announcement," the statement read. "Larin remains under contract with Orlando City through 2019 and is expected to join his teammates at preseason camp later this month."

But in acquiring forward Justin Meram from Columbus in Monday, Orlando appears to be preparing for life after Larin. The American-born Iraq international has 37 goals and 33 assists in seven seasons with Columbus, collecting 13 of those goals in 2017.

Columbus got US$1,050,000 in allocation money for Meram: $300,000 in targeted allocation money and $300,000 in general allocation money for the 2018 season and $450,000 in TAM for 2019 season, plus an international roster slot for 2019.

Meram joins Dom Dwyer in the Orlando attack.

Larin, a former MLS rookie of the year, has 43 goals in 87 games for Orlando over three seasons. He made $192,000 last season, according to the MLS Players Association.

Larin has played 23 times for Canada with five goals. The move to Besiktas reunites Larin with Canadian teammate Atiba Hutchinson.

European weekend review: Messi applauded by opposing fans

Sportsnet.ca
European weekend review: Messi applauded by opposing fans
European weekend review: Messi applauded by opposing fans

Every Monday, I’ll wrap up what happened over the weekend in the top leagues across Europe, and I’ll share what I think are some of the most insightful soccer reads on the web from the past week.

CAN ANYBODY CATCH BARCA?

Second-place Atletico Madrid was held to a 1-1 draw at home by Girona on Saturday, while third-place Valencia was upset by relegation-threatened Las Palmas on the same day. That opened the door wide open for Barcelona to extend their lead atop La Liga, which the Catalans duly did by earning a 5-0 win away to Real Betis on Sunday.

As is stands, Barca now leads the Spanish first division with 54 points, and is still unbeaten, with 17 wins and three draws. It’s increasingly difficult to see how Atletico (43 points) and Valencia (40) can close the gap on the blaugrana, even with a little less than half of the season remaining.

More on La Liga: Friday roundup || Saturday roundup || Sunday roundup

Worth a read: Many glowing tributes were written about Ronaldinho after the Brazilian announced his retirement last week. But Sid Lowe’s column in The Guardian, titled Ronaldinho: a player so good he made you smile, hit the nail on the head:

“Watching Ronaldinho was fun, it made people happy. Those may be two of the most simple, childish words of all but they are the right ones. Football stripped right down to its essence: happy, fun.”

RONALDO-MESSI WATCH

Lionel Messi bagged a brace in Barca’s destruction of Real Betis to take his league-leading tally to 19 goals, four more than teammate Luis Suarez.

But it wasn’t his two goals that stood out the most in what was another masterful performance from the Argentine. In the ultimate sign of respect, Betis fans applauded Messi for this lovely bit of skill:

Cristiano Ronaldo bagged a brace in a 7-1 win over Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday, but it was an injury to the Real Madrid star that blew up Twitter.

Ronaldo, who had not scored in La Liga since Dec. 9, was kicked in the head after scoring his second goal and began to bleed on the field. As the Portuguese star walked off the pitch, he was handed an iPhone by the team doctor in order to check the damage. Of course, a flood of memes on social media ensued.

NAPOLI STILL KING OF THE HILL

Serie A resumed on Sunday following a two-week break, with league leaders Napoli securing a 1-0 win away to Atalanta as Dries Mertens found the back of the net to end his long scoring drought (he had gone 908 minutes in Serie A without a goal).

It was an impressive and important win for Napoli, having lost three of their last four games against Atalanta. It also allowed Maurizio Sarri’s side to create some daylight between them and second-place Juventus – Napoli now enjoys a four-point lead over Juve, who host Genoa on Monday night.

More on Serie A: Sunday roundup

Worth a read: Sportsnet contributor Peter Galindo wrote this terrific feature for These Football Times on the history of South American players in Italy.

The influence of stars from South American has been immense in Serie A, including at Inter Milan, as Galindo writes:

“Inter have a deep and illustrious history with international players, hence the club’s official name of Internazionale. South Americans have been an especially vital part of the club’s pedigree. From Jair in the 1960s to Javier Zanetti, they have greatly contributed to some of Inter’s most notable achievements.”

BAYERN KEEPS ON ROLLING

Manchester City and Barcelona aren’t the only teams running away in the title race in their respective leagues. Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Mueller both scored a pair of goals in Bayern Munich’s 4-2 win over Werder Bremen on Sunday, a result that allowed the Bavarians to build a 16-point cushion over Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke, who are tied for second place.

Mueller is the fifth Bayern player in history to score 100 Bundesliga goals, after Gerd Müller (365), Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (162), Roland Wohlfarth (119) and Dieter Hoeness (102). Incredibly, Bayern have never lost a league match in which he’s scored: 74 wins and four draws.

More on Bundesliga: Friday roundup || Saturday roundup || Sunday roundup

Worth a read: Author and renowned German soccer pundit Raphael Honigstein offered his view on the breakdown in the relationship between Borussia Dortmund and Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyag, who looks set for a transfer move to Arsenal.

Honigstein writes:

“What had once been swept under the rug comes out into the open, as the club seeks to explain its decision to fans and the public. It’s fair to say the divorce of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Borussia Dortmund is fast heading for precisely that PR endgame. While the Gabon striker has so far been careful not to lay blame at his employers’ door, the flurry of indiscretions detailing his unprofessional behaviour has been telling.”

LYON SINKS PSG WITH LATE GOAL TO CLOSE GAP

In what was one of the best games of the weekend on the entire continent, Lyon upset Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 in France’s Ligue 1 courtesy of an injury-time strike from Memphis Depay.

PSG had defender Dani Alves sent off in the 57th minute, but they looked set to leave Lyon with a point. Coming on as a second-half substitute, Depay cut in from the left after taking a pass from fellow forward Nabil Fekir, and then unleashed a blistering strike from 25 yards out into the top left corner. The loss was only PSG’s second of the season, and it allowed Lyon to leapfrog Monaco and Marseille into second place. PSG tops the table with an eight-point cushion on Lyon.

More on Ligue 1: Friday roundup || Saturday roundup || Sunday roundup

Worth a read: Jerome Pugmire of The Associated Press looked at the recent renaissance of Mario Balotelli, and how the Italian’s return to form has helped Nice climb up the table in Ligue 1.

“Balotelli is a player transformed, sharp and hungry for goals. The temperamental Italian, renowned for his antics on and off the field, now appears fully focused on his career.”

THE ARSENAL OF OLD RETURNS

You can check out my Premier League weekend review, including on how Arsenal exploded for four goals in the opening 22 minutes of a 4-1 home win over Crystal Palace, a display that was reminiscent of “the Arsenal of old” when Thierry Henry was around.

Also, Richard Buxton was at Turf Moor and filed this report for Sportsnet on Manchester United’s win over Burnley, and how Anthony Martial might have sent a warning to manager Jose Mourinho.

The Sportsnet panel of James Sharman, Craig Forrest and Danny Dichio also recapped Saturday’s action:

Struggling Hamburger SV sacks Markus Gisdol as coach

Hamburger SV has sacked Markus Gisdol as coach following the side’s 2-0 defeat at home to last-place Cologne in the Bundesliga.

Hamburg says its board of directors and sporting director Jens Todt came to the decision to let Gisdol go, along with assistant coaches Frank Froehling and Frank Kaspari, and that they were informed on Sunday morning.

Defeat to Cologne the night before was the side’s fourth in succession and it left Hamburg just three points off the bottom.

Hamburg chairman Heribert Bruchhagen says, "We believe that a new impetus is urgently needed to achieve the previous goal of survival."

Gisdol had been in charge since Sept. 25, 2016 but never managed to steer the side away from the bottom half of the table. Hamburg — the only side to have played every Bundesliga season since the league’s formation in 1963 — finished one point above the relegation zone last season.

While it finished five points clear in 2016, the club needed playoffs to survive in 2015 and 2014.

Hamburg says athletics coach Daniel Muessig will take over for Sunday’s training session with a decision to be made on Gisdol’s successor "very soon."

Bordeaux hires former Premier League star Gus Poyet as coach

BORDEAUX, France — Gus Poyet has been hired as coach of French league club Bordeaux.

Bordeaux made the announcement on Saturday after defeating Nantes 1-0 in the league under interim coach Eric Bedouet, who was put in temporary charge on Thursday following Jocelyn Gourvennec’s departure.

Poyet, a 50-year-old Uruguayan, has signed a one-year deal. Financial terms of the contract were not revealed.

A former Chelsea and Tottenham player, Poyet has previously coached clubs including Brighton, Sunderland and more recently Shanghai Shenhua.

Gourvennec was fired following a string of poor results and a home loss to Caen that left Bordeaux just two points above the relegation zone. Gourvennec led Bordeaux to a sixth-placed finish last season.

MADRID — Angel Rodriguez came off the bench to help Getafe salvage a 2-2 draw after twice trailing Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish league on Friday.

Rodriguez entered the match shortly after his team missed a penalty kick early in the second half, scoring the equalizer with a shot from close range in the 74th minute.

The result extended Getafe’s unbeaten streak at home to seven matches in all competitions.

Inaki Williams put the visitors ahead in the 13th minute at Coliseum Alfonso Perez. Jorge Molina evened the match by converting a penalty kick in the 21st and Raul Garcia put Athletic ahead again three minutes into the second half.

Molina had a penalty stopped by Athletic goalkeeper Iago Herrerin in the 51st.

Getafe moved to seventh in the standings with 27 points from 20 matches.

Athletic, unbeaten in eight matches in all competitions, is in 10th place with 26 points.

CARDIFF, Wales — Wales has handed Ryan Giggs his first coaching job since ending an illustrious playing career.

The Football Association of Wales turned to its former winger, whose only previous experience as a manager was four games in temporary charge of Manchester United in 2014.

Giggs replaces Chris Coleman, who left last year to manage Sunderland after Wales failed to qualify for the World Cup.

Coleman led Wales to the semifinals at the 2016 European Championship.

Giggs played 64 times for Wales but never made it to a major tournament.

Giggs was a rarity in soccer by spending his entire playing career at one club. Giggs played a record 963 times for Manchester United and became British soccer’s most decorated player.

Manchester City invincible no more after loss to Liverpool

Sportsnet.ca
Manchester City invincible no more after loss to Liverpool
Manchester City invincible no more after loss to Liverpool

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND – It had to end sooner or later for Manchester City.

None had proved more formidable than Pep Guardiola’s side in their march to the title, but a sleeper-like hold over the Premier League is officially over with Sunday’s 4-3 loss to Liverpool at Anfield. Nine minutes was the difference between infallibility and mere mortality.

Headless-ness took hold as City surrendered a game where they had appeared well-placed to reclaim, with 10 points previously garnered from losing positions this term. They will continue to stroll to an end-of-season coronation, but it is no longer a glorified procession.

Few would deny that they will be worthy champions, held in the same esteem as their illustrious predecessors, but their quest for record-breaking perfection has taken an early detour. Arsenal’s record 49-game unbeaten streak is safe for another campaign at least.

Seeing out the remainder of this season without tasting defeat was always an unrealistic ask, even by Guardiola’s admission. If the Catalan had a choice to call time on his side’s run, losing another battle of wills with Jurgen Klopp – his sixth in total – was a perfect storm.

“Football is unpredictable,” Guardiola stated post-match.

“Of course you lose today against a fantastic team and you have to be sure to win the next one and see until the end, fighting to win the Premier League.

“But you have to live [these moments]. During the season, today in the real world, it’s not expected, especially in that league with a lot of games with a tough two months in the past with four competitions, to maintain against good teams to not lose every time.

“These kinds of things must happen and now, we analyze tactically the reasons why and be positive, thinking of Newcastle. That is only what we can do.”

https://twitter.com/RichardBuxton_/status/952559522454949888

But defeat sees Guardiola discovering a new-found level of challenge in a career where mercurial abilities had allowed him to breeze through at the highest level of football.

The warning signs had been there earlier in the week, when a late strike by Sergio Aguero saw off Championship outfit Bristol City in the League Cup semifinal. As a player and coach, Guardiola knew the pitfalls of playing at Anfield. Uncharacteristically, he saw his players allowing themselves to succumb to the stadium’s emotionally-charged atmosphere.

“After that we lost a little bit of our control,” Guardiola admitted.

“We were involved in the environment from Anfield for many, many reasons.

“You have to try and be stable, especially as good lessons for the knock-out games in the Champions League. We can concede a goal but you cannot lose – we lost that a little bit.

“But we were still fighting, still trying and we found two goals, and that’s all

“It was our first defeat. You need to live [through] that kind of situations to realize what we have done so far and are expecting for the future.”

Off the field, too, he is encountering uncharted territory. Rarely has the former Barcelona manager missed out on targets, but a reunion with Alexis Sanchez threatens to be his most notable, with the previously foregone conclusion in signing the Arsenal forward now appearing potentially ominous in the face of Manchester United’s newly-formed interest.

Life after Philippe Coutinho, meanwhile, continues apace for Liverpool.

The “Fab Four” may have disbanded but a “Big Three” remains in its place as Klopp elected to fight fire with fire rather than bow to the conservatism. By the end here, his side was hunting in packs with even Andrew Robertson joining the action as a marauding left-back.

“It sent out the right statement,” Klopp admitted.

“It’s not that I said in the meeting ‘boys, by the way it would help a lot if you could win tonight and nobody speaks about Philippe Coutinho anymore.’ We like talking about him, actually, and he is probably still jumping in his new living room in Barcelona and happy about the win tonight.

“But of course, for us, it’s important that we show that it’s possible to play without him – and we did that. It’s a very important statement, absolutely, but that’s all.

“We knew before the game, we can only get three points and we got them, how I think, in a very important moment as well so it feels good for tonight.

“Now we have another long week to prepare for the Swansea game so we should use that.”

https://twitter.com/RichardBuxton_/status/952570238054420480

Attention has already turned to the identity of the Brazilian’s replacement, but risk and reward are traditionally at odds when the Reds have attempted to replace what they have lost. In recent years, they have parted with some of their most exquisite players in a generation while allowing sub-par alternatives to take their places.

Klopp’s utopian vision is at odds with that recent transfer policy. He prefers to cultivate a side that cannot be disrupted or picked apart rather than poorly replacing like-for-like. The latter has been easier said than done. The German is all too aware of the pressures of continuity when a star departs; his final years with Borussia Dortmund were dominated by the theme.

In the Liverpool manager’s eyes, direct solutions primarily appear from within and never was that truer than in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s performance on Sunday, both as the architect of both his side’s opener and a key influence in their two goals thereafter. In just 20 games at Anfield, the England international has scored the same number of goals as in three seasons with Arsenal.

“It’s so nice to see how much he adapted. It’s just good and I am happy,” Klopp said.

“I could not have had kind of an idea of what a good guy he is, to be honest. If you asked me what is better, the football player or the person, I would have to think a little bit about it.

“He is on a good way and enjoys it. He can still play the wing, which is really important, [but] using the speed more and more in a midfield role.

“He needs to adapt a little bit and the midfield role was more of a dream for him than a reality because he didn’t play there often.

“But he is in a really good way.”

https://twitter.com/RichardBuxton_/status/952601035029311488

Flaws still exist, however, with Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation brought into sharp focus again with the passing of Tommy Lawrence, the original last line of defence in Bill Shankly’s heyday, earlier this week. The current incumbents continued the debate over suitability as Loris Karius failed to leave the writing on the wall for Simon Mignolet.

Beaten comfortably at his near post by Leroy Sane for City’s equalizer told a familiar take for the German stopper. Far too often Karius has been a victim of his previous success, having arrived with a reputation of being second in the Bundesliga to Manuel Neuer only.

Mignolet’s own previously unassailable presence had undermined the club’s once ruthless succession policy. At the first signs of even slight susceptibility, the likes of Sander Westerveld, Jerzy Dudek and Pepe Reina were all moved on by those in Anfield’s corridors of power.

An inability to follow through that philosophy is part of the reason why Liverpool can currently only hold their own against the likes of City over 90 minutes rather than an entire season.

Richard Buxton is a UK-based writer and special correspondent for Sportsnet. He filed this report from Liverpool’s Anfield stadium.

Monaco title challenge fades after draw at Montpellier

Sportsnet.ca
Monaco title challenge fades after draw at Montpellier
Monaco title challenge fades after draw at Montpellier

PARIS — Monaco drew at Montpellier 0-0 on Saturday and further relinquished its grip on the French title it won so convincingly last season.

If league leader Paris Saint-Germain wins at fifth-place Nantes on Sunday it will move 11 points clear of Monaco with 20 of 38 matches played.

Monaco scored more than 150 goals in all competitions last season, finishing eight points ahead of PSG in Ligue 1, plus reached the Champions League semifinals.

But Monaco sold four key players in the off-season and was toothless against the best defence in France, especially without rested top scorer Radamel Falcao.

Eighth-place Montpellier has conceded only 13 goals in 20 league games — two less than PSG — and it showed as Monaco failed to muster clear chances.

Monaco will drop to third if Lyon beats Angers at home on Saturday.

Next up for Monaco, meanwhile, is a French Riviera derby at home to Nice on Tuesday.

Nice is in sixth place after scraping a 1-0 home win against Amiens, with midfielder Pierre Lees-Melou scoring with a deflected effort midway through the second half.

——

THAUVIN MAKES HIS MARK

Winger Florian Thauvin joined PSG’s Neymar as the best passer in the league and added a goal as fourth-place Marseille won at Rennes 3-0.

He almost got an incredible fourth goal for Marseille in injury time, hitting the crossbar with a delightful floating chip from near the halfway line.

Thauvin has nine assists, in addition to nine league goals, and is staking a strong claim for a place in France’s squad for the World Cup in Russia. More scintillating performances like this and it will be easy for coach Didier Deschamps to make up his mind.

After shrugging off missing a first-half penalty, Thauvin set up striker Valere Germain for a close-range finish in the 35th minute.

Midfielder Morgan Sanson made it 2-0 with a fine curling strike from the edge of the penalty area just before halftime, after swapping passes with Germain.

The irrepressible Thauvin finished off Rennes in the 82nd, drifting to the back post to meet Luiz Gustavo’s dipping cross and sending a looping header over goalkeeper Tomas Koubek.

"We won in style," Thauvin said. "I hope we can keep going like this."

Koubek and Marseille counterpart Steve Mandanda did well in the first half, with Koubek clawing away Thauvin’s penalty with both hands in the 27th minute.

——

OTHER MATCHES

Under-pressure Bordeaux coach Jocelyn Gourvennec’s decision to hand striker Gaetan Laborde his first start of the season paid off.

Laborde previously made only five substitute appearances this campaign, but he struck in the 15th minute as Bordeaux won 1-0 at Troyes.

The win moved Gourvennec’s side up to 13th place, while Troyes is 16th.

Lille climbed into 14th spot with a 1-0 win at Caen. Striker Nicolas Pepe scored his fifth of the season and both sides had a player sent off either side of halftime.

Also, striker Nolan Roux scored an 89th-minute equalizer as last-place Metz drew at mid-table Dijon 1-1.

Landon Donovan coming out of retirement again to play in Mexico

MEXICO CITY — Captain American is heading south for his latest comeback.

Landon Donovan, widely considered the most accomplished player in American soccer history, is coming out of retirement for the second time in three years, this time to join Club Leon in Mexico.

The Liga MX team announced Donovan’s return to soccer on Twitter on Friday night. Donovan will play for Leon in the Mexican Clausura tournament, although more details on his signing were not provided.

Donovan has spent the past three days in Leon, raising speculation that he might join the club. He also tweeted Friday about joining Club Leon, saying he was excited to face former U.S. teammate and current C.F. Pachuca player Omar Gonzalez next month.

"I loved the city, Leon is an historic and winning team," Donovan wrote in Spanish. "I don t believe in walls, I want to go to Mexico, dress in green and win tournaments in Leon. See you soon."

Donovan is the third player signed by Leon for the Clausura tournament along with Argentinian Emanuel Cecchini and Jamaican Giles Barnes.

The 35-year-old is the career scoring leader in Major League Soccer and for the U.S. national team. He returned to the LA Galaxy of Major League Soccer in September of 2016 following a 21-month retirement and appeared in nine games. He hasn’t played professionally since Nov. 6, 2016.

Donovan played in three World Cups: South Korea and Japan 2002, Germany 2006 and South Africa 2010. He also played in six Gold Cups and won four titles. He scored 57 goals playing for the U.S. team and 145 in the MLS.

Donovan has done broadcast work since retiring and was rumoured to be considering a run for U.S. Soccer Federation president. Donovan announced in November that he would not seek the position.

Luka Modric appears in Madrid court in tax fraud case
MADRID -- Croatia midfielder Luka Modric has appeared in court in a tax fraud case in Madrid.

Officials said Tuesday Modric was in court for about 10 minutes along with his wife and lawyer. The player's wife, Vadja, is also being accused of tax irregularities.

Spanish prosecutors have accused the Real Madrid midfielder of defrauding tax authorities of 870,728 euros (about $1 million) in 2013 and 2014.

Local newspaper El Mundo says Modric has already paid nearly 1 million ($1.2 million) to tax authorities to try to reach a settlement even though the player has denied any wrongdoing.

Court and tax officials say they cannot confirm or deny the payment. Details of Modric's court appearance have not been released.

Modric has been playing for Madrid since being signed from Tottenham in 2012.

Several other players have been targeted by Spanish tax authorities recently, including Lionel Messi who two years ago was found guilty -- along with his father -- for defrauding 4.1 million euros ($4.9 million) from income made from image rights.

Other players investigated include: Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcelo, Ricardo Carvalho, Angel Di Maria, Javier Mascherano, Radamel Falcao and Fabio Coentrao.

Former Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho, currently at Manchester United, is also being investigated.

Juve’s Matuidi racially abused for 2nd successive weekend in Italy
Juventus midfielder Blaise Matuidi says he was the victim of racial abuse for the second successive Saturday in Italian soccer. The incident at Cagliari happened two days after Hellas Verona was punished for its fans hurling racist chants at Matuidi. Writing on Facebook after Saturday’s 1-0 win at Cagliari in Serie A, Matuidi said: “I experienced racism during the match. Weak people try to intimidate with hate. I am not a hater and can only be sorry for those who set bad examples.” Details of the abuse were not specified. Matuidi wrote that “football is a way to spread equality, passion and inspiration and this is what I am here for. Peace.” Born in France to an Angolan father and a Congolese mother, Matuidi plays for France’s national team. Verona was fined 20,000 euros ($24,000) for the Dec. 30 incident but a partial stadium closure will come into effect only if there is another racism offense at the club over the next year. Hectic Premier League schedule will ‘kill’ players, warns Guardiola

Hectic Premier League schedule will ‘kill’ players, warns Guardiola
Hectic Premier League schedule will ‘kill’ players, warns Guardiola
MANCHESTER, England -- Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has hit out at the amount of games played in the Premier League over the festive period, saying the schedule is going to "kill" the players.

City was one of the teams to play four games in 11 days across Christmas and the new year, with the last two matches -- away to Crystal Palace and at home to Watford -- coming just two days apart.

"What I saw, what everybody sees, in the last weeks is how many injuries the players have," Guardiola said. "We are going to kill them (the players). The federation -- whoever the bosses are --have to reflect. It's not normal."

Guardiola's ire might have been caused by the sight of right back Kyle Walker holding his groin in the final minutes of the 3-1 win over Watford on Tuesday. The City coach said Walker "might have a little bit of a problem."

City lost striker Gabriel Jesus to a ligament injury early in the 0-0 draw at Palace on Sunday that will keep him out for up to six weeks.

"I know the show must go on and it doesn't matter with which guys the show must go on," Guardiola said.

"Here in England, you don't protect the players -- that is a big mistake. You have to do it for the quality, not quantity. Play every three, four, five days, but not every two days ... Look at how many players have muscular injuries in this period. But it doesn't matter; the show must go on. And that's why there will be players not fit."

Guardiola's comments came as Palace's Scott Dann and Jason Puncheon were ruled out for the remainder of the season. Manager Roy Hodgson said both players had suffered cruciate ligament injuries in Sunday's 0-0 draw with City.

"We won't see anything of those players for the rest of our season and it is going to be hard for them to get ready even for the start of next season, because these are serious injuries," Hodgson said after Palace's 2-1 win at Southampton on Tuesday.

Jonathan Gonzalez: U.S. didn't contact me about November call-up
Herculez Gomez debates whether Monterrey's Jonathan Gonzalez's international future lies with the U.S. or Mexico. Jonathan Gonzalez says U.S. Soccer did not approach him about potentially making his senior national team debut in November's friendly against Portugal. Gonzalez, 18, is a U.S. youth international but has yet to play for the senior team despite enjoying a breakout year playing in Mexico, where he helped Monterrey win the Copa MX and was named to the Liga MX Apertura Best XI. For the November camp, U.S. Soccer made a decision to allow Gonzalez to stay with his club ahead of the Liga MX playoffs,...
