Whitecaps striker Kei Kamara has ‘no love’ for Columbus Crew

Whitecaps striker Kei Kamara has ‘no love’ for Columbus Crew

VANCOUVER — Striker Kei Kamara has some history in Columbus. Maybe that’s why he was sending mixed messages about his return to MAPFRE Stadium when the Vancouver Whitecaps try to hand the Columbus Crew their first defeat of the Major Soccer League season Saturday.

"No, no love for Columbus," Karama said after a training session this week. "Definitely no love. I’m excited to go back and play there. There’s a lot of history."

Kamara, who joined the Whitecaps in the off-season, had two stints in Columbus. He was selected ninth in the 2006 SuperDraft and played two seasons with the Crew before being traded to San Jose in 2008. He returned to Columbus in 2015 but had a messy exit.

In a 2016 game against Montreal, Columbus was leading 3-1 in a match where Kamara had scored twice. When the Crew were awarded a penalty kick, Kamara — who was looking for the hat trick — and teammate Federico Higuain become involved in an on-field dispute over who would take the shot.

Higuain, the team’s designated penalty taker, eventually scored on the play but Montreal would rebound for a 4-4 draw.

After the game Kamara criticized Higuain, calling him selfish and saying he wasn’t a teammate. The crew suspended Kamara for his remarks and then traded him to New England.

Kamara, who heard some boos when he played in Columbus last year, said he has nothing to prove this weekend.

"Not at all," said the 33-year-old, who has played on seven teams over his 11 years in MLS. "It’s been a couple of seasons.

"This is a new season. I don’t have to prove anything over there. Getting a win over there will be great."

Kamara has spoken with Higuain since the incident.

"We took time to talk," he said. "We’re teammates, no matter what happened in the past.

"MLS is one big family. No matter what happens between you and players, you are going to see each other again."

Kamara leads Vancouver with two goals and an assist in three games. He also collected his 100th MLS regular season goal in a win over Houston.

Besides the personal overtones, the Vancouver-Columbus matchup features two of the league’s better teams. The Crew (3-0-1) lead the Eastern Conference while Vancouver (2-1-1) is second in the West.

The Whitecaps opened the season with two wins before dropping a 4-1 decision in Atlanta. Last week at BC Place Stadium they failed to score in a 0-0 draw against an undermanned L.A. Galaxy team.

Scoring hasn’t been a problem for Columbus. Entering weekend play, the Crew have eight goals. Only Kansas City has more with nine.

Vancouver head coach Carl Robinson said an attacking offence can be a double-edged sword.

"Sometimes your strength can be your weakness," he said. "They play a certain way and they are pretty open in their play. When they have the ball they are very good. When they don’t have the ball they are vulnerable to transition at certain times.

"We have to make sure that the shape of our team is compact, (that) we are nice and organized (and) we don’t have too many gaps appear because they have key players in key areas. We also believe we can take advantage of their weakness. Because of their expansive play, they do leave themselves a little bit vulnerable."

This will be Vancouver’s third trip East in four weeks. Robinson said the jury is out on whether it’s best to get the long road trips done early in the season.

"Leave it to the end, you’re fighting for points and playoffs are in sight (so) it becomes a little bit scary," he said. "If you do it early in the season, then you risk getting points on the board.

"You just have to take it as it is."

The Whitecaps will have captain Kendal Waston back in the lineup after the big defender missed last week’s game due to Costa Rican national team commitments. Midfielder Aly Ghazal, who has been recovering from a pre-season hamstring strain, is also close to returning.

Columbus centre back Josh Williams, who returned last week from a heel injury, said the Crew must be prepared to defend against the Whitecaps’ crosses.

"They have some good targets," Williams said on the Crew’s website. "We don’t want to get too stretched.

"They have a guy like Waston and a couple speedy wingers. Communication is important."

Despite doing well in the standings, the Crew are dealing with the off-field distraction of owner Anthony Precourt wanting to move the franchise to Austin, Texas. State and city officials have gone to court in an effort to prevent the move.

Kamara was asked for his reaction to the potential move.

"If I was the commissioner I’d probably move them to Vegas," he said with a smile.

John Herdman starting to change culture of Canadian men’s team

Sportsnet.ca
John Herdman starting to change culture of Canadian men’s team
John Herdman starting to change culture of Canadian men’s team

SAN PEDRO DEL PINATAR, Spain – In his seven years directing the Canadian women’s soccer program, John Herdman developed a reputation for being a meticulous planner, trying to be on top of everything that can be controlled.

An example of that came in the lead-up to the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup as Canada prepared to host the tournament. One of the things Herdman had his staff do was to time how long it would take him and his players at halftime to get into the dressing rooms at the World Cup venues. Not a second was to go to waste.

That same attention to detail is being applied by Herdman in his early days in charge of the Canadian men’s team. While the on-field product will naturally take some time to develop, the refrain from players in the first camp held by Herdman is that objectives have been clearly communicated by the new coach.

“He has a lot of ideas and he’s really clear. I think he’s really committed,” midfielder Samuel Piette told Sportsnet. “He knows the culture, as well, having been with the women’s side. It’s good to have a guy that was part of the program and transmitting his ideas through the men’s program.”

Piette is emblematic of the normal Canadian player experience over the last few years, as many members of this team have dealt with a revolving door of coaches. Piette made his debut in 2012 under Stephen Hart when he was only 17. Now 23, he is playing for his seventh different Canadian men’s team coach. At least in these early days under Herdman, the players know success will only come when the team starts to expect success.

“I think he wants us to change a bit the mentality. Before we used to accept mediocrity,” Piette said. “Failing was a normal thing for us. That’s what we want to change. He has a clear objective and clear ideas. It’s a winning mentality and being on the front foot imposing our game.”

In Saturday’s 1-0 friendly win against New Zealand, Canada gutted through a shaky opening stretch where it easily could have found itself trailing. But with flashes from some of the younger players and some patient build-up, Canada stayed organized and earned a win in Herdman’s first match in charge.

“We stuck to [Herdman’s game plan] the whole game,” said goal scorer Tosaint Ricketts. “As you could hear, our communication was loud on the field. Everyone knew everyone else’s job, and it helped us down there in those nervy moments. You saw we built from that in the first 15 minutes on.”

Herdman kept the mood light in training during the week leading up to Saturday’s contest. For this training camp, he brought over some of the same staff members he used when he coached Canada’s women’s team.

Herdman explained this camp was about the players hearing his vision for the program, getting to know him and laying down a tactical foundation. The real test as to whether the buy-in is complete from the players will be when the going gets tough while playing in challenging CONCACAF environments that have long been the bane of the Canadian program.

“I don’t think you ever really know that until the time comes when big moments happen,” Herdman stated. “I think the big moments are coming in the CONCACAF Nations League later this year but I would say they’ve been really receptive. They’re taking on board some of the elements of the identity we’ve been shifting.”

Canada’s early opponents in the new Nations League won’t exactly strike fear in most teams’ hearts, but given the unpredictable nature of road games in CONCACAF, there is always the possibility of a slip-up should there be a breakdown between players and coach.

“It’s going to be interesting,” Piette offered. “I think our next meeting is in September. So, it’s going to be a long period of not being together so it’s just to get his ideas and make sure we apply them when we get together.”

Quickly getting his team up to speed is where Herdman’s meticulous nature will be a benefit.

Unlike the women’s game, necessity dictates the men’s side must make the most of short international windows, and get the players in and organized right away. The switch to the much shorter camps is maybe the biggest transition Herdman has had to make, but the players seem to enjoy how the camp was run.

“Organizationally, it’s been fantastic,” veteran defender David Edgar said. “We know what we’re doing and when we’re doing it. It’s a clear vision and that’s key. We’re all on the same page and everyone has to be on the same page. I think, so far, the boys are buying into it and that’s massive for us.”

As the players now return to their clubs, the work accomplished this week in southeastern Spain can’t get lost in a vacuum. To prevent that, the development must continue even if the Canadian team isn’t together.

“Through the MLS season, the most important part for us is to stay connected with the group,” Herdman said. “We’ve set up online platforms that we’ve been working with the players through so that there isn’t a hiatus forgetting about our culture so the players know what’s coming. It’s not goodbye for Canada until September.”

With victory in the bag against New Zealand in the admittedly first modest hurdle of Herdman’s tenure, Canada has now established a base and it seems some trust has been built.

Herdman shared instructions many times during the game with goalkeeper Milan Borjan, and with a first victory and clean sheet, it appears the players do share their new coach’s vision.

“Speaking to [them] afterwards, they’re happy with what we set up,” Herdman said. “Speaking with Samuel Piette, he says there’s just so much more to come.”

“And I think there is.”

Euro world: Inter Milan’s Icardi hits milestone in Serie A

Sportsnet.ca
Euro world: Inter Milan’s Icardi hits milestone in Serie A
Euro world: Inter Milan’s Icardi hits milestone in Serie A

Every Monday, I’ll pick out the best weekend highlights from the top leagues across Europe, and I’ll share what I think are some of the most insightful soccer reads on the web from the past week.

RONALDO IS ON A TEAR

Remember all of that talk from some fans and media pundits earlier this season about Cristiano Ronaldo slowing down, and that his past days are behind him?

The Portuguese star reminded everybody he still has plenty of gas left in the tank, scoring four goals in Real Madrid’s 6-3 home win over Girona on Sunday.

How good has Ronaldo been lately? Consider this:

Cristiano Ronaldo's last 11 games…

One four-goal haul.
One hat-trick.
Six braces.

TWENTY-ONE goals overall. pic.twitter.com/IwbfOots8N

— Sky Bet (@SkyBet) March 18, 2018

Ronaldo has also scored at least one goal in his last eight matches, and now has 22 goals in La Liga this season, one more than Barcelona’s Luis Suarez, and three behind league top scorer Lionel Messi.

MAURI ICARDI’S BACKHEEL

Not to be outdone by Ronaldo, Mauro Icardi also scored four goals, as he played a starring role in Inter Milan’s 5-0 destruction job of Sampdoria on Sunday. Icardi, 25, became the sixth-youngest player in Serie A history to score 100 goals. It was also the sixth career hat trick for the Argentine.

The pick of the bunch against Sampdoria was the Argentine’s second goal, when his wonderful back-heeled shot handcuffed goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano and defender Gian Marco Ferrari and trickled over the goal-line.

Icardi vs Sampdoria

4 shots on target 4 goals. In his first game back from injury Icardi turned on the style. Scary to think what he can do at a creative attacking team.

[ @afchoncho]pic.twitter.com/uLEYX5u4NH

— (@Tacticomotion_) March 18, 2018

The four-goal effort couldn’t have come at a better time for Inter, who are involved in a dog fight with Lazio for fourth place in the Serie A table. Also, Icardi hadn’t scored in the league since January, and he was left off of manager Jorge Sampaoli’s national team squad this week ahead of Argentina’s friendlies with Italy and Spain later this month. His outburst against Sampdoria will have no doubt caught Sampaoli’s attention and gave him something to think about for next time.

IS MAN UNITED CRACKING AT THE FOUNDATION?

That was the question debated by Sportsnet’s James Sharman and Craig Forrest after Manchester United beat Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup on Saturday. Even though the Red Devils are through to the semifinals, and currently sit second in the Premier League table, Jose Mourinho’s incredible rant has led to serious questions about whether the Portuguese manager is still the right fir for the club.

BATSHUAYI LOVING LIFE AT DORTMUND

Chelsea loanee Michy Batshuayi scored a spectacular first-half goal to lead Borussia Dortmund to a 1-0 victory over visitors Hannover on Sunday in the Bundesliga. Since arriving in Germany back in Janaury, Batshuayi, 24, has scored six goals in seven games for Dortmund.

Sunday’s strike was his best of the six, though, as he scored on a spectacular, back-heeled volley in the 24th minute from a corner kick. The goal came after the Belgian should have opened the scoring early on in the game when his shot from in close hit the woodwork.

ALVES HEADS HOME WINNER FOR PSG

Dani Alves brought Paris Saint-Germain one step closer to clinching the Ligue 1 title by scoring his first league goal of the season with a late header in PSG’s 2-1 at Nice on Sunday.

The 34-year-old Brazilian managed to slip through Nice’s defence and found himself unmarked in the box where he nodded home Adrien Rabiot’s curling cross into the bottom right corner in the 82nd minute. PSG is now 17 points up of defending champion Monaco with seven matches left in the campaign.

TOP READ ON THE WEB OF THE PAST WEEK

Time is slowly running out for Arsenal’s Per Mertesakcer.

Prior to the start of the 2017-18 Premier League campaign, the German defender confirmed he would retire at the end of the season. Mertesacker has played a lot of soccer during his 15-year career. His body is broken, his energy running dangerously low. The end is near, and it’s a good thing it is, because he doesn’t have much more to give.

Antje Windmann of Der Spiegel, a German weekly news magazine published in Hamburg, sat down with the Arsenal man, who is determined not to hoodwink fans and media, but rather be bluntly honest about the human cost of the sport. It’s a sobering story of the trials that many footballers face on a day-to-day basis as they entertain us and earn a living, while at the same time trying to live normal lives.

Windmann writes:

“The nausea comes four to five seconds before kickoff. Every time. Once he takes his position on the pitch, surrounded by roaring fans, and he knows that, once again, he has to give it his all for 90 minutes.

The tension, he says, becomes almost unbearable. ‘My stomach starts churning and I feel like I’m going to throw up. Then I have to choke so hard that I tear up.’ He always turns his head to the side with his chin facing his shoulder so that no one can see what is happening — no TV cameras, no coaches, no teammates. So that no one will ever ask what’s wrong with him before each match, what’s wrong with Per Mertesacker, the quiet, confident defender. …

Mertesacker doesn’t want to go out with a whimper. He says he wants to leave something behind for ‘the following generations.’

He wants to provide a glimpse into the brutality of the football business. He wants to clear up false assumptions and show what it really means to live the job that many see as a dream: the need to stand up to ruinous pressure, being trapped in an unending cycle of training and games yet constantly being reduced to your performance.

You’re always just the player and never the person behind the jersey.”

North American 2026 World Cup bid has 23 candidate cities

TORONTO — The North American bid for the 2026 World Cup includes 23 candidate host cities, including Edmonton, Montreal and Toronto.

FIFA will select up to 16 host cities from the list of 23 if the so-called unified bid gets the nod over Morocco at the FIFA Congress in June.

The potential host cities were announced in advance of the final bid submission from Canada, Mexico and the U.S., to be submitted Friday to the world governing body of soccer in Zurich.

Vancouver dropped off the list at the last minute, as did Chicago over concerns about FIFA’s demands.

The unified bid plan calls for 10 matches in each of Canada and Mexico with 60 of the 80 games in the new expanded 48-team tournament format to be held in the U.S.

The American candidate cities are Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New York/New Jersey, Orlando, Philadelphia, San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle and Washington D.C.

The Mexico candidate cities are Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterrey.

The new competition format will feature 16 groups of three with the top two from each pool advancing to a 32-team knockout. The tournament time period will remain at 32 days.

Iniesta's return key for Barcelona against Chelsea

MADRID — Andres Iniesta has a knack for great performances against Chelsea. His injury-time goal in the semifinals of the 2009 Champions League remains one of the most important of his career. And he also scored against the English club in the 2012 semifinals, even though Barcelona was eliminated that time. In the first leg […]

Kamara scores 100th goal as Whitecaps beat Dynamo

HOUSTON — As much as Kei Kamara appreciated reaching the 100-goal milestone in MLS play on Saturday, he was happier to help his team earn three points.

Kamara scored his 100th regular-season goal, Brek Shea had the go-ahead score early in the second half and the Vancouver Whitecaps beat the Houston Dynamo 2-1 on Saturday night.

"It’s an honour to really be playing for the Whitecaps now and reaching this milestone for this club," said Kamara, who was playing in his 300th regular-season MLS game. "Not just that, I’m playing against one of the teams I used to play with with the Dynamo.

"We were able to get three points tonight so not just the goal or the milestone, it’s a big game so it was good."

Shea scored on a breakaway goal in the 49th minute after he was sprung free by Kamara’s pass up the left channel.

Kamara gave Vancouver (2-0-0) the early lead with a penalty kick in the 28th minute. He drew the penalty when he was pushed down in the box by Philippe Senderos. Kamara has scored twice in as many games.

Kamara said that the only milestone he’s after now is winning his first MLS Cup.

"One thing that’s not under my belt is a championship ring," Kamara said. "That’s the focus, that’s what I’m playing for right now and hopefully I’m able to get to that pretty soon."

Alberth Elis drilled a right-footed blast past Stefan Marinovic to even the score for Houston (1-1-0) in the 39th minute.

Deportivo loses again, Seedorf’s struggles continue

MADRID — Deportivo La Coruna’s poor run under coach Clarence Seedorf continued with a 2-0 loss at Girona in the Spanish league on Friday, extending the team’s winless streak to six matches since the former Dutch midfielder took over.

It was the third win in a row for surprising Girona, which has impressed in its first-division debut. The Catalan club is in sixth place, in position to make it to the Europa League next season.

Striker Christian Stuani scored his 15th league goal to put the hosts ahead in the 21st minute, and defender Juanpe Ramirez added to the lead with a header early in the second half.

It was Girona’s fourth win in its last seven matches.

Deportivo has lost four of its six matches since Seedorf took over in February, being outscored 8-1.

The league champions in 2000, Deportivo hasn’t won in 13 consecutive matches in all competitions. It is second-to-last in the 20-team standings, inside the relegation zone with 19 points from 28 matches.

This is Seedorf’s third attempt at coaching after brief stints with AC Milan in 2014 and a Chinese club in 2016.

Spanish league leader Barcelona visits last-place Malaga on Saturday, while second-place Atletico Madrid — eight points off the lead — hosts Celta Vigo on Sunday.

100 Days to Russia: Five iconic World Cup moments

100 Days to Russia: Five iconic World Cup moments
100 Days to Russia: Five iconic World Cup moments

Tuesday marks the 100-day countdown to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

In celebration of the tournament being 100 days away, Sportsnet looks at five iconic World Cup moments.

The greatest team of all time

Brazil’s 1970 World Cup-winning side is regarded by the majority of historians and critics as the greatest soccer team of all-time. The Brazilian squad that competed in Mexico boasted a slew of world-class players — Pele, Jairzinho, Tostao, Rivelino and Carlos Alberto — and won all six of its games en route to capturing its third World Cup, the first country to do so.

The sheer beauty and grace of the Brazilian team was perfectly encapsulated in the last goal of its 4-1 win against Italy in the final. Clodoaldo breezed past a couple of Italian players before passing to Pele. The Brazilian wizard moved down the left side and drifted towards the middle. Pele found some open space and sensing Carlos Alberto was coming down the right side, he played a perfect square pass 25 yards from goal that Alberto lashed onto without breaking stride and hammered past static Italian goalkeeper Enrico Albertosi. It was an emphatic goal in an emphatic victory that saw the Brazilians, purveyors of the “beautiful game,” put the dour, defensive-mind Italians in their rightful place.

The goal of the century

Mere minutes after the infamous ‘Hand of God’ goal at the 1986 tournament in Mexico, Argentina’s Diego Maradona scored what is generally considered the greatest goal in World Cup history. Starting in his half, Maradona embarked on a 60-yard run, dribbling past no less than five English players with the ball glued to his foot, bursting into the penalty area with a quick turn of pace and sublimely slipping the ball past England goalkeeper Peter Shilton. England was out, Argentina was through to the semifinals, and Maradona’s goal became known as the “Goal of the century.”

The greatest game of all time

Italy’s 3-2 victory over Brazil in the quarterfinals of the 1982 tournament in Spain. Legendary BBC play-by-play announcer John Motson called this the greatest match he’s ever commented on. It had drama, fantastic goals, great saves and one hero: the indomitable Paolo Rossi, who led the Italians to victory over a Brazil side that some critics hailed as even better than the 1970 World Cup-winning team.

’They think it’s all over. It is now.’

BBC television commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme’s description of the final moments of the 1966 final between England and West Germany at Wembley Stadium is the British equivalent of Foster Hewitt’s famous “Henderson has scored for Canada!” call at the 1972 Summit Series. Down 3-2, the Germans threw players forward in numbers, desperately searching for an equalizer, but were left exposed at the back. Bobby Moore played a long pass for Geoff Hurst who completed his hat trick in the final minute of extra time as fans began to pour onto the field.

Here’s how Wolstenholme described Hurst’s final goal: “Some people are on the pitch (the crowd starts to spill onto the field)… they think it’s all over (Geoff Hurst scores to put England two goals ahead)… IT IS NOW!”

The miracle on grass

The greatest upset in World Cup history took place on June 29, 1950 in Belo Horizonte Brazil when England, who previously mocked the idea of the World Cup and never doubted that it was the best soccer nation in the world, fell 1-0 to the United States in the first round. The result was so improbable — the Americans were 500-1 underdogs to win the World Cup — that when word reached back to England, people thought it was a misprint in the newspapers.

Barcelona held by Las Palmas ahead of Atletico match

MADRID — Barcelona couldn’t manage more than 1-1 against relegation-wary Las Palmas on Thursday, allowing Atletico Madrid to move within five points of the Spanish league lead ahead of their match this weekend.

Barcelona, which has drawn three of its last five league matches, will host Atletico on Sunday needing to halt an eight-match winning streak by Diego Simeone’s team.

Barcelona was 11 points in front of Atletico just six rounds ago, but could end the weekend only two points in front of the Madrid club.

Atletico was boosted by a 4-0 win over Leganes on Wednesday, when Antoine Griezmann scored all four goals.

Lionel Messi put Barcelona ahead on Thursday with a powerful free kick shot into the top corner in the 20th minute, but the hosts equalized through a penalty kick converted by Jonathan Calleri early in the second half after a controversial handball by Barcelona defender Lucas Digne.

At first it wasn’t clear why the penalty was called. A corner kick ricocheted off a post and the ball brushed Digne’s arm. Some Barcelona players initially thought the referee called a foul by Sergio Roberto on Matias Aguirregaray when the ball first arrived into the area.

Coach Ernesto Valverde said he and his players still didn’t know what the call was.

Barcelona also complained about a non-call of handball by Las Palmas goalkeeper Leandro Chichizola outside the area just before halftime.

It was the fifth free-kick goal by Messi, who is the league leading scorer with 23, three more than teammate Luis Suarez. The Argentine playmaker has four goals in his last three matches. The Gran Canaria Stadium was one of the few venues where Messi was yet to score in La Liga.

Las Palmas stayed 18th in the 20-team standings, inside the relegation zone. The team from the Canary Islands has won only one of its last six matches.

BETIS DRAWS

Real Betis missed a chance to get near the Europa League qualification spots after being held by Real Sociedad to 0-0 at home.

The result dropped Betis to ninth place, four points behind Eibar, the first team securing a spot in Europe’s second-tier competition.

Sociedad stayed in 14th place.

Real Betis had won three of its last four matches.

Canadian women’s team loses to Sweden in Algarve Cup opener

ALGARVE, Portugal — Canada fell 3-1 to Sweden on Wednesday in its opening match of the 2018 Algarve Cup women’s soccer tournament.

Mimmi Larsson, Fridolina Rolfo and Stina Blackstenus scored for Sweden, which capitalized on Canada’s defensive errors.

Janine Beckie scored for Canada, the Algarve Cup winner in 2017 and runner-up last year.

Larsson scored just before half when she jumped on a loose ball and beat Canadian goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe.

Canada drew level in the 47th minute. Allysha Chapman sent a ball down the pitch for Nichelle Prince, who beat her mark and shot on net, and Beckie banged in the rebound.

Sweden responded in the 52nd minute, with Rolfo’s shot from the wing to make it 2-1, then Sweden capped the scoring in the 87th minute when Blackstenus scored following an errant pass Canadian pass in front of Labbe.

Canada will next play Russia on Friday and South Korea on Monday.

“Despite the score line, we saw a lot of positives in this match,” said Kenneth Heiner-Moller after his first match as head coach of Canada’s senior women’s soccer team. “There are certainly things we will take away and work on before we face Russia, but overall the players put a lot out there tonight and we are proud of them.

“We’ve asked this team to be the most creative group in this tournament and to continue building on the efforts that saw Canada draw the USA in November — a tactically creative, enjoyable form of soccer — and they did that tonight.”

The match saw the return of veteran Canadian midfielder Diana Matheson, who had been sidelined since anterior cruciate ligament surgery in 2016. Her last match was Canada’s win against host Brazil in the bronze-medal match at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
