Aubameyang helps Arsenal to win at Bournemouth

Aubameyang helps Arsenal to win at Bournemouth

BOURNEMOUTH, England — Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored his eighth Premier League goal of the season to earn Arsenal a hard-fought win at Bournemouth on Sunday.

The Gunners had drawn their last three league games but Aubameyang’s second-half strike was enough to extend their unbeaten run to 17 matches in all competitions.

Jefferson Lerma scored a remarkable volleyed own-goal to give the visitors the lead at the Vitality Stadium, with Joshua King levelling for Bournemouth before Aubameyang scored to seal a 2-1 victory.

Stream weekly matchups from around the Premier League with Sportsnet NOW. Get access to the Premier League, FA Cup, Bundesliga, Scottish Premiership and more.

Unai Emery sprung a tactical surprise by starting with a three-man defence and it paid off as Sead Kolasinac, playing as a wing-back, laid on both Arsenal goals as they moved to within a point of Chelsea in fourth place.

Alexandre Lacazette missed out with a tight groin, while the change in system meant Mesut Ozil was only among the Arsenal substitutes.

The hosts thought they were ahead early on but David Brooks was flagged offside as he slotted home King’s through ball.

Arsenal went up the other end and Lucas Torreira rattled the foot of the post with an arrowed shot, with Alex Iwobi only able to lash the rebound high and wide.

Bournemouth was certainly the better team as the visitors struggled to adapt to a new formation, with Callum Wilson heading at Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno as the Cherries continued to push for the opener.

King’s pace was causing problems for the recalled Sokratis Papastathopoulos, who was shown a yellow card for hauling the Bournemouth man to the ground on the edge of the penalty box.

But it was Arsenal which took the lead with a half hour on the clock, Lerma accidentally turning Kolasinac’s cross past Asmir Begovic with a finish any top Premier League striker would have been proud of.

Iwobi drew a smart stop out of Begovic as the visitors looked to double their advantage before the break — but instead Arsenal’s run of not leading at halftime this season continued.

Cardiff is the only other top-flight side yet to hold a halftime lead in the league this season and King’s smart finish with the last meaningful kick of the opening 45 minutes ensured Bournemouth went in level. Arsenal was again pushing for a second goal but, having lost possession in the Bournemouth box, a rapid counterattack ended with King converting past Leno.

Neither side could create anything of note at the start of the second half. The Arsenal fans began to call for the introduction of Ozil but were soon celebrating the lead as Aubameyang slid in to score from six yards in the 67th after another Kolasinac cross.

Lerma almost atoned for his own-goal but struck the same post as Torreira with a low drive before Leno had to be alert to push the ball behind after it looped toward goal off the foot of Sokratis.

Boca Juniors players sick and injured after bus attack

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Boca Juniors players were injured after their bus was attacked on the way to the Copa Libertadores final against River Plate on Saturday.

Boca chairman Daniel Angelici requested the second leg be suspended, but South American soccer body CONMEBOL said it would delay kickoff for only one hour.

The Boca bus had several windows broken by stones and wooden sticks thrown by River fans near River’s Monumental de Nunez Stadium. Several players were hit by shattered glass and suffered the effects of tear gas and pepper spray used by police to contain the violence.

Footage showed players Pablo Perez, Carlos Tevez, Nahitan Nandes, Dario Benedetto, Mauro Zarate, Ramon Abila, and Agustin Almendra among the injured.

Perez was sent to a nearby hospital.

"They threw pepper spray at us, all sorts of objects," striker Benedetto said.

Police made arrests in the area of the stadium, but it was not clear whether those were connected to the incidents.

CONMEBOL executives were expected to meet FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who came to Buenos Aires to attend the match, for a final call on whether the final should proceed or not.

Meanwhile, 66,000 River Plate fans were in the stadium waiting for a match that has been one of the most anticipated in Argentine football history. No visiting fans are allowed in the stadium, following a 2013 ban on away fans to stop football related violence in Argentina.

Boca and River drew 2-2 in the first leg two weeks ago.

Diego Costa in scoring slump before Atletico hosts Barcelona

Sportsnet.ca
Diego Costa in scoring slump before Atletico hosts Barcelona
Diego Costa in scoring slump before Atletico hosts Barcelona

BARCELONA, Spain — With his imposing frame, aggressive attitude and talent for scoring difficult goals, Diego Costa has rightfully earned his reputation as a terror for defenders.

But that status is in serious danger after a scoring drought in the Spanish league that dates back to February.

The 30-year-old Costa hasn’t scored in nine appearances for Atletico Madrid in the league this season, partly because he has been hampered by two muscle injuries which have also cost him a place on Spain’s national team.

Saturday offers an ideal scenario for Costa to break out of his slump when Atletico hosts Barcelona on Saturday with the league lead on the line. Barcelona leads the competition by one point ahead of three teams, including Atletico in third place.

Costa is expected to be cleared to play against Barcelona after returning to practice this week following an international break.

True to coach Diego Simeone’s emphasis on keeping a clean sheet, Atletico is in the title hunt thanks to a stingy defence that has given it six wins, five draws and one loss. The team leads the league with only eight goals allowed, while scoring 16. That contrasts with Barcelona, which has scored a league-leading 34 times and conceded 18 goals.

After an erratic start to his career when he was loaned out to several smaller clubs, Costa found a backer when Simeone took over the team in 2011. The match was perfect. Costa gave Simeone the enforcer on the field that he needed to inspire his code of maximum effort from his players.

The result was the club’s most successful era. Costa helped win the 2013 Copa del Rey title and was the driving force in attack for Atletico’s 2014 league win.

"He gives us strength and energy," Simeone said about Costa last month. "It is important to have his personality and force. … He gives a boost to our fans, his teammates and our coaching staff."

Costa returned to Atletico midway through last season after spending three years at Chelsea, where he won two Premier League titles. Despite only scoring three goals in the league, he helped Atletico win the Europa League title and finish second to Barcelona in the league.

After scoring three goals for Spain at the World Cup, the Costa of old appeared to have resurfaced at the start of this season when he netted two goals in a 4-2 win over Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup in August. But his only other goal in any competition since then came on Sept. 18 when he scored in a 2-1 win at Monaco in the Champions League.

Simeone still values Costa’s contributions even when he is not scoring goals. That said, Costa’s problem is not a question of lacking his scoring touch or running across inspired goalkeepers.

He is not producing the scoring chances of a top-notch striker.

Costa has only managed to generate seven shots in the league this season. Teammate Antoine Griezmann has three goals from 24 shots, while Barcelona counterpart Luis Suarez has scored nine goals from 36 shots.

And it seems that Simeone may be losing faith in the player.

Simeone substituted Costa at halftime of the 3-2 win over Athletic Bilbao after seeing he was incapable of threatening to score or set up a teammate.

Simeone, however, doesn’t have a great second option if he wants to sit Costa against Barcelona. His only other true striker is the untested Nikola Kalinic. Otherwise, he could align another playmaker like Angel Correa or forwards Victor "Vitolo" Machin or Gelson Martins, or just bulk up his defence to slow down Lionel Messi.

UEFA warns clubs over financial abuses after Man City leaks

UEFA warns clubs over financial abuses after Man City leaks
UEFA warns clubs over financial abuses after Man City leaks

MANCHESTER, England — Previously concluded Financial Fair Play cases could be reopened, UEFA warned on Monday as evidence grows of Manchester City’s attempts to disguise its source of income and spending.

The UEFA statement on the prospect of the financial compliance system being “abused” by teams comes after internal correspondence exposing City’s alleged deception was published by European media outlets.

The reigning English Premier League champion and current leader has not provided a defence or disputed the authenticity of the information from leaked emails which reveal elaborate attempts over several years to try to avoid breaching the rules designed to curb overspending on player costs.

City, which has been owned by Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Mansour for a decade, has already been punished for violating FFP after reaching a settlement agreement with UEFA in 2014 that saw it fined rather than banned from the Champions League.

Having spent more than a week declining to comment on the information in the “Football Leaks” documents, UEFA has issued a response to questions about City that raises the prospect of new sanctions.

“Should new information suggest that previously concluded cases have been abused, those cases may be capable of being re-opened as determined on a case by case basis,” UEFA said. “This approach is applied universally to all clubs that apply for a UEFA license and participate in European club competitions.”

Live stream weekly matchups from around the Premier League with Sportsnet NOW. Get access to the Premier League, FA Cup, Bundesliga, Scottish Premiership and more.

The agreement with UEFA eventually saw City forfeit only 20 million euros ($23 million) in Champions League prize money. UEFA has not said how aware it was in 2014 of City’s plans to hide spending of more recent schemes, which have been reported in a five-part series by German magazine Der Spiegel.

“FFP is a framework which clubs that wish to play in UEFA competitions agree to abide by,” the organizer of the Champions League and Europa League said in a statement. “It relies on the co-operation of clubs to declare a complete and genuine financial position. While UEFA can test the information it receives, it relies on that information being fair and accurate reflections of a club’s finances.”

The title sponsor of City’s stadium, training campus, and jersey backer is Etihad Airways, the state-owned airline from Abu Dhabi. Sheikh Mansour is a member of Abu Dhabi’s royal family and deputy prime minister of the United Arab Emirates.

The leaks emails claimed to show in 2015 how the Etihad deal generated 67.5 million pounds annually for City. But City’s holding company — state-backed Abu Dhabi United Group — channeled 59.9 million pounds back to Etihad, according to Jorge Chumillas, the club chief financial officer in an internal email.

The evidence could be significant for UEFA which checks clubs’ finances annually to ensure they are meeting break-even requirements on a rolling three-year basis.

“This includes a thorough assessment of clubs’ financial positions on the basis of both the information disclosed by the clubs (based on their independently audited financial statements) as well as a number of compliance checks and analysis undertaken by UEFA (including independent external audits),” UEFA said. “If new information comes to light that may be material to this assessment, UEFA will use that to challenge the figures and will seek explanation, clarification or rebuttal from the club concerned.”

Abu Dhabi United Group was also alleged to be sending cash to a shell vehicle which was created to supposedly buy the right to use players’ images in marketing campaigns. This helped raise revenue by 30 million euros in one case cited by Der Spiegel, which reported City’s emails from 2013.

City has not commented on its use of the Fordham Sports Management image rights company or attempts to shift costs away from the club.

Roberto Mancini, who managed City from 2009-13 and won the Premier League in 2012, was also shown to have received more pay from a team Sheikh Mansour owns in Abu Dhabi than from the Manchester club. Der Spiegel shows Mancini signed two contracts at the same time, to receive a base salary of 1.45 million pounds from City and 1.45 million pounds and 1.75 million pounds for advising Al Jazira Sports.

Since July 2011, UEFA has monitored the annual accounts of all clubs entering its two club competitions. The first period UEFA assessed clubs for compliance with FFP was 2011-13 when owners were allowed to cover losses up to 45 million euros.

UEFA requires clubs to approach break-even on football-related business — television rights fees, buying and selling players, salaries, sponsor deals, tickets sales, prize money. The complex accounting rules encourage clubs to spend on long-term projects — stadiums, youth training — which do not count as losses for FFP purposes.

“Financial Fair Play has led to a step change in the health of the finances in European club football,” UEFA said on Monday. “Seven years ago, European clubs had a cumulative debt of 1.7 billion euros. Last year it was a profit of 600 million euros. Without question, it has been a success for the game across Europe.”

Qatar-owned Paris Saint-Germain was sanctioned for overspending in 2014 at the same time as City. The Spanish soccer league last year asked UEFA to investigate City and PSG, claiming they benefit from state aid which “distorts European competitions” and “is irreparably harming the football industry.”

Atlanta moves on to East final after win over NYCFC

ATLANTA — Josef Martinez scored two goals and Atlanta United won the first playoff series in franchise history, knocking off New York City FC 3-1 in the second leg of the Eastern Conference semifinals Sunday.

Atlanta won the two-game series 4-1 on aggregate, finishing off the visiting team with Martinez’s second goal on a breakaway in the 83rd minute. The game drew a crowd of 70,526 — another attendance record for the 2-year-old franchise that has quickly developed one of the world’s most rabid soccer followings.

The victory made up for the bitter disappointment of Atlanta United’s inaugural season, when the expansion team made the playoffs but lost a knockout-round game at home to Columbus on penalties.

Atlanta claimed a big edge in the series by winning the first leg, 1-0 at Yankee Stadium. United, which finished two points behind New York Red Bulls in the Supporters’ Shield standings, returned home merely needing a tie to go through to the Eastern Conference final. They got more than that, earning a spot in the conference final against either Columbus or the Red Bulls.

Miguel Almiron also scored for United. Maxime Chanot scored for New York City.

Napoli fights back to beat Genoa to stay close to Juventus
Napoli fights back to beat Genoa to stay close to Juventus

MILAN — In a match which had to be suspended for nearly 15 minutes because of rain, Napoli almost saw its Serie A title hopes given a dousing, too.

Napoli fought back from a goal down and needed a late own goal to win at Genoa 2-1 on Saturday and keep within sight of leader Juventus.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side cut the gap to three points to Juventus, which visits AC Milan on Sunday.

Inter Milan can move back level on points with a win at Atalanta, also on Sunday.

"Proud of my players who pushed through less than desirable conditions and competed well until the last minute. Bravo!" Ancelotti wrote on Twitter.

Ancelotti did not speak to the press after the match but instead sent his son and assistant manager Davide Ancelotti.

"The coach needs squad rotation too!" Davide joked.

"Winning in this weather and atmosphere was really difficult, especially after going behind. The pitch was practically unplayable. And that is the added value of this team, which knows how to impose its rhythm and change the match at any moment."

Genoa was the only team to have taken points off Juventus in Serie A but came into the match having lost at Inter 5-0 last weekend.

Lorenzo Insigne hit the post for Napoli early on but it was Genoa which took a surprise lead in the 20th minute when Christian Kouame headed in Romulo’s cross.

It was raining heavily in Genoa and the match was halted in the 59th minute for about 13 minutes until the rain stopped and the pitch could be partly drained.

Napoli levelled shortly after play resumed, thanks to its two halftime substitutes. Mertens flicked on Allan’s pass for Fabian Ruiz to slot past Ionut Radu.

And Napoli completed its comeback four minutes from time when Genoa defender Davide Biraschi deflected Mario Rui’s free kick into his own net.

OTHER MATCHES

Cagliari completed a remarkable comeback from two goals behind, scoring twice in three minutes to draw at Spal 2-2.

Andrea Petagna gave Spal the perfect start when he headed in Manuel Lazzari’s cross in the third minute and Mirco Antenucci looked to have secured the win when he doubled his side’s lead in the 71st.

However, Leonardo Pavoletti headed in a corner two minutes later to pull one back for Cagliari and Artur Ionita levelled when he fired home the third goal in the space of five minutes.

Earlier, goals from Gervinho and Roberto Inglese helped Parma end Torino’s six-match unbeaten run 2-1.

Daniele Baselli scored for Torino shortly before halftime.

Chelsea, Eintracht, Lazio advance in Europa League

Olivier Giroud ended his drought by scoring the only goal to lead Chelsea to a 1-0 win at BATE Borisov on Thursday that clinched a place in the knockout stage of the Europa League with two group games to spare.

Giroud had not scored for Chelsea for six months but he knows what it’s like to net against BATE. Last season, the France forward was on target in both games against the Belarusian champion when he played for London rival Arsenal in Europe’s second tier competition.

Arsenal also made it through after a 0-0 home draw against Sporting marred by Danny Welbeck’s injury. The England striker was carried off on a stretcher after appearing to sustain a serious ankle problem. He needed to receive oxygen before he was taken to hospital.

Zurich reached the next stage, together with Bayer Leverkusen, after the German side won their encounter 1-0. Eintracht Frankfurt beat Apollon Limassol 3-2 to advance, while Lazio beat Marseille 2-1 to march into the next round and eliminate last year’s runner-up.

Dinamo Zagreb was another team to progress to the knockout phase after the fourth round of matches. Ten-man Sevilla won 3-2 at Akhisar thanks to a late penalty, but Anderlecht’s hopes of going through are over.

Here’s a look at Thursday’s action:

PERFECT CHELSEA

Emerson Palmieri crossed from the left in the 53rd minute and Giroud stooped to head in for Chelsea. The France striker was playing up front instead of Alvaro Morata, who was rested.

The win extended the club’s unbeaten streak this season to 17 games, but Chelsea was given several scares by BATE, which hit the woodwork three times.

Chelsea tops Group L with a maximum 12 points. Hungary’s Vidi is second on six points after a 1-0 victory over PAOK .

ARSENAL HELD

Arsenal was held to a 0-0 home draw by Sporting, which had Jeremy Mathieu sent off for a professional foul on substitute Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang three minutes from the end.

Aubameyang, who replaced the injured Welbeck in the 30th minute, missed a string of scoring chances.

Arsenal tops Group E with 10 points, three ahead of Sporting. Qarabag joined Vorskla on three points after winning their match 1-0.

BETIS ON TOP

Spanish midfielder Suso curled in a free kick to salvage a 1-1 draw for seven-time European champion AC Milan at Real Betis, which had taken the lead in the 12th minute through Giovani Lo Celso.

Betis tops Group F on eight points, one ahead of Milan and Olympiacos, which thrashed Dudelange 5-1.

LAST-GASP SEVILLA

Ever Banega converted a penalty three minutes from time against Akhisar as he grabbed the winner for Sevilla, the most successful club in Europa League history.

Earlier, Nolito and Luis Muriel gave the Spanish club a 2-0 lead, but Elvis Manu started a comeback for Akhisar in the 52nd, four minutes before Sergi Gomez was sent off. Onur Ayik then equalized for the Turkish side after 78.

Sevilla is tied atop Group J on nine points with Russia’s Krasnodar, which beat Standard Liege 2-1.

OTHER GROUPS

Takumi Minamino’s hat trick inspired Salzburg to a 5-2 win at Rosenborg, its fourth straight victory in Group B. Celtic beat Leipzig 2-1 to join the German side on six points.

In Group H, Luka Jovic, Sebastien Haller and Mijat Gacinovic scored as Eintracht made it four wins from four games. Emilio Zelaya netted twice for Apollon, the second time from the penalty spot.

Marco Parolo headed the opening goal for Lazio in first-half injury time and Joaquin Correa beat goalkeeper Yohann Pele 10 minutes into the second before Marseille got one back through Florian Thauvin.

Eintracht has 12 points followed by Lazio on nine. Marseille and Apollon, both on one point, are out.

In Group G, Spartak Moscow beat Rangers 4-3 in a thriller after the Scottish club had led 3-2. Villarreal leads the section with six points after drawing 0-0 at Rapid Vienna. Rangers and Spartak are one point behind.

Anderlecht’s campaign came to an end after a 2-0 defeat at Group D rival Fenerbahce. Zagreb advanced from that section after a 3-1 victory over Spartak Trnava.

Lower-league experience could help Dos Santos with Whitecaps

VANCOUVER – While it might have been the worst kept secret in Canadian soccer, the Vancouver Whitecaps made it official Wednesday by naming Marc Dos Santos as its new coach.

Dos Santos, 41, replaces Carl Robinson who was let go in late September, and joins Vancouver after being an assistant coach for LAFC this season.

A native of Montreal, Dos Santos becomes the sixth coach of the Whitecaps, but the first Canadian-born to handle the duties since the club entered Major League Soccer in 2011. A highly successful coach at lower levels, Dos Santos said accepting the job in Vancouver was a no-brainer.

“Number one… it’s a Canadian club,” Dos Santos answered when asked why he decided to take on the role. “I have a passion towards this country. It’s the country that gave me an opportunity to start my career.”

He later added: “It’s a club that has a dream of continuing to build players through their academy. Working on that vertical integration was very appealing to me also.”

[radioclip id=4305499]

Prior to his time in MLS, Dos Santos worked his way up the professional coaching ranks with great success in Canada and the United States, as well as in South America. It began for him by coaching his hometown Montreal Impact to a USL First Division title in 2009. Six years later, he led the Ottawa Fury to an appearance in the NASL Fall Season Final.

In between those Canadian stops, he was on the sidelines for youth squads of some of the best professional clubs in Brazil, including powerhouse Palmeiras. Dos Santos’ most recent success came two years ago when he led the now-defunct San Francisco Deltas to a NASL Soccer Bowl title. That same season he also won the league’s Coach of the Year award.

“Marc is a confident, driven leader who has proven himself as a winner at every level he has been tested,” Whitecaps co-owner Jeff Mallett stated. “Bringing in Marc positions the club to meet our goals of competing with the best in the league and to win trophies for Vancouver’s loyal supporters.”

What should not be over-looked is the invaluable experience Dos Santos has gained the last two years by working alongside some of the best coaches in North America. This season, he assisted former U.S. national coach Bob Bradley in building a club from scratch and turning LAFC into the most successful expansion teams in MLS history.

He also worked closely with long-time Sporting Kansas City boss Peter Vermes in 2016 when he coached their USL affiliate Swope Park Rangers. Sporting KC has a reputation of being one of the best teams in MLS when it comes to retaining players and developing homegrown talent.

“With Peter in Kansas City, I learned a lot about how that vertical integration works between the first team and reserve team,” Dos Santos explained. “With Bob, he gave me a lot of courage in how I was looking at the game and to move forward as a coach. I feel blessed to have worked with him.”

While he has not spoken with all of his new players, Dos Santos did meet with a few of them working out at the training centre Wednesday, including Canadian internationals Russell Teibert and Doneil Henry. Even though he was focused on winning with LAFC at the time, Dos Santos is fully aware of how many Whitecaps players sounded off publically at the end of the season.

Claims of divisions within the locker room and criticisms of individuals being more concerned about themselves rather than the team made headlines across the league. Dos Santos knows having a strong culture throughout the squad will be a top priority.

“Wherever I’ve been, it’s been a concern for me to develop a culture in the locker room that is a winning one,” said Dos Santos, who is fluent in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese. “There are things that have happened in the past here that were very good and others that were not so good. I’m here to change that and try to bring it to another level.”

Regardless of which members of the current squad will return next season, the hope amongst fans is that Dos Santos will urge Whitecaps ownership to spend big money on new players to fill Designated Player spots. Kei Kamara, who led the team with 14 goals, was the highest paid player on the roster, at $1 million US. Dos Santos wouldn’t say one way or the other if the club will be a big spender this off-season. His main task is to get the most out of the players he will have at his disposal.

“In my career, I’ve always focused on maximizing what I have. You can waste a lot of energy talking about what others have,” Dos Santos said. “I prefer spending time on what we have. From that point of view, you build strong foundations. Then it could allow you, one day, to go after a player like that.”

Thierry Henry’s struggling Monaco side loses at Reims

Thierry Henry’s struggling Monaco side loses at Reims

PARIS — Thierry Henry must be wondering what he signed up for as Monaco’s new coach.

After four matches, the France great has yet to win one, and his side is languishing in 19th place in the French league after losing at Reims 1-0.

Even with Colombia striker Radamel Falcao back from injury and coming off the bench for the entire second half, Monaco failed to score after Reims midfielder Alaixys Romao was sent off after 50 minutes. Monaco midfielder Pele was red-carded with 20 minutes left.

Monaco has seven points from 12 games and will drop to last place if Guingamp draws at Nantes on Sunday.

Henry has little to cheer him up, either.

Next weekend Monaco is at home to runaway leader Paris Saint-Germain, which has won its opening 12 games to set a European record for the top five leagues. PSG’s latest win was 2-1 at home against Lille on Friday.

Meanwhile, Lyon missed the chance to move into third place when it drew Bordeaux 1-1 at home, despite taking the lead through highly rated midfielder Houssem Aouar’s fourth goal of the season.

OTHER MATCHES:

While Henry is struggling to fix things at Monaco, his former France and Arsenal teammate Patrick Vieira is slowly getting things right at Nice.

A 1-0 win at home to Amiens moved his side up to ninth place, following a difficult start to the season.

In other games, it was: Caen 1, Rennes 2; Dijon 0, Nimes 4, and Strasbourg 1, Toulouse 1.

SUNDAY GAMES

Montpellier can move above Lille into second place on goal difference if it beats fifth-place Marseille by two goals.

If Marseille loses, Saint-Etienne can take fifth spot with a home win against Angers.

Griezmann scores from free kick in another draw for Atletico

BARCELONA, Spain — Antoine Griezmann scored from a free kick before Atletico Madrid conceded a late goal to draw 1-1 at Leganes in the Spanish league on Saturday.

Atletico’s third straight draw away from home in the league left it in second place and one point behind Barcelona, which visits Rayo Vallecano later.

Griezmann’s left-footed strike curled the ball over the wall and into the net in the 69th minute.

Leganes equalized when Guido Carrillo put in a rebound from a shot that hit the post in the 82nd.

Atletico has only won one of six away matches in the league this season.

"We know that it is at grounds like these where league titles are decided," Atletico midfielder Saul Niguez said. "Leganes played a good first half, but we have to be more ambitious."

Real Madrid hosts Valladolid later, and Valencia welcomes Girona.

Mbappe and Neymar score as PSG beats Lille for 12th win

Mbappe and Neymar score as PSG beats Lille for 12th win

PARIS — Kylian Mbappe scored a spectacular goal and then set up Neymar as runaway French league leader Paris Saint-Germain won at home to second-place Lille 2-1 on Friday.

PSG’s 12th straight win from the start of the season is a record for the top five European leagues, beating Tottenham’s 11 opening wins in 1960 in England.

PSG coach Thomas Tuchel picked midfielder Marco Verratti, who was stopped by police this week for driving over the alcohol limit.

Verratti helped to create Mbappe’s goal in the 70th minute, threading a quick pass to Neymar who then picked out Mbappe’s run.

The France World Cup star was slightly fortunate as Neymar’s pass clipped the leg of a defender and rolled to him, but he finished exquisitely by curling the ball into the bottom right corner from about 20 metres.

Even though the 19-year-old Mbappe has played in only seven of PSG’s league games, he is already on a league-leading 11 goals.

He flicked the ball to Neymar in the 84th, and the Brazil forward advanced past three players before his slightly deflected shot from near the edge of the area went in.

Lille striker Nicolas Pepe confidently struck a penalty past veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon in the third minute of injury time for 2-1.

While defending champion PSG is coasting in Ligue 1 and guaranteed to be 11 points clear after this weekend, it is having a much harder time in the Champions League.

PSG travels to play Napoli on Tuesday under big pressure after picking up four points from the first three group games.

Tuchel left out striker Edinson Cavani altogether against Lille, with a view to starting him against his former side on Tuesday.

Champions League review: No Messi, no problem for Barca

Here’s what happened on Wednesday in the UEFA Champions League, in case you missed it…

READ ALL ABOUT IT

Roundup: Barca wins without Messi, PSG leaves it late, Spurs in trouble & more

SCOREBOARD

Club Brugge 1, AS Monaco 1 || Borussia Dortmund 4, Atletico Madrid 0 || PSV Eindhoven 2, Tottenham 2 || FC Barcelona 2, Inter Milan 0 || Liverpool 4, Red Star Belgrade 0 || Paris Saint-Germain 2, Napoli 2 || Galatasaray 0, Schalke 0 || Lokomotiv Moscow 1, FC Porto 3

THE MAIN STORY

No Messi, no problem
Inter Milan visited the Camp Nou full of confidence on the heels of a dramatic 1-0 win over city rivals AC Milan in the Derby della Madonnina on Sunday, to say nothing of the fact they were about to face Barcelona without Lionel Messi. The Argentine ace was forced to watch Wednesday’s proceedings from the stands after injuring his arm against Sevilla on the weekend.

But any thoughts the Italians had that they would have an easy time of it against the Catalans were immediately dashed. Save for the opening 15 minutes when Inter caused Barca problems with its high press, the hosts eventually took control of the match and never looked to be in serious danger.

There’s no denying that Messi is the centrepiece of this marvellous Barcelona side, but they have plenty of quality to beat most European teams without him. Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho, Ivan Rakitic, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba are top-calibre players, and they more than carried the load for the Spanish outfit as it dispatched the Italians without much trouble.

Manager Ernesto Valverde’s decision to start Rafinha in Messi’s absence proved an astute move. The Brazilian opened the scoring when he recovered the ball and then quickly led a counter-attack which he finished off by volleying home an inch-perfect cross played into the box by Suarez.

Barcelona has now won 21 of its last 27 games it’s been forced to play without Messi (with only four losses) since his debut in the competition, underlining that this is far from a one-man team.

BEST GOAL

Angel Di Maria came to PSG’s rescue deep into injury time. With the French champions looking to equalize, they swarmed in attack as they pinned Napoli deep inside its half. Julian Draxler took advantage of the space he was in and fed a pass out wide to Di Maria. The Argentine made no mistake from there, hitting a sweet curler from outside the penalty area that nestled inside the far post.

BEST MOMENT

In the 38th minute, CSKA Moscow’s Aleksei Miranchuk sped down the right flank before pulling the ball back for twin brother Anton Miranchuk, who fired a powerful shot past FC Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas to open the scoring for the Russians.

BEST GAME

It’s difficult to look beyond the 2-2 draw between Paris Saint-Germain and Napoli at the Parc des Princes, where the two sides duked it out in an attacking affair. Di Maria’s injury-time goal was just the icing on the cake.

HE SAID IT

“You need to kill the opponent when you have the opportunity. If you didn’t win this type of game, it’s so difficult to deserve to qualify [for the knockout round] in the Champions League.” – Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino

THE GAME WITHIN THE GAME

Down 1-0 to PSV on the road, Tottenham could have lost its composure and let the game get away from them, especially after having what appeared to be a tying goal ruled out for offside. Instead, the English side kept its cool and remained focused on its patient buildup play, confident that it would allow them to reap rewards. It did, as Lucas Moura equalized and Spurs went into the halftime break on level terms.

• Rafinha is the 78th different player to score a Champions League goal for Barcelona, more unique goalscorers than any other club in the competition.

• FC Porto has won back-to-back games in the Champions League for the first time since November 2016.

• Mohamed Salah has scored 50 goals for Liverpool in just 65 games in all competitions.

• Atletico Madrid’s 4-0 loss away to Borussia Dortmund is the biggest defeat the club has suffered under manager Diego Simeone in all competitions.

Late goal allows PSV Eindhoven to earn draw with Tottenham

Late goal allows PSV Eindhoven to earn draw with Tottenham

EINDHOVEN, Netherlands — Captain Luuk de Jong scored a late equalizer Wednesday to salvage a 2-2 draw for PSV Eindhoven against 10-man Tottenham in the Champions League.

Tottenham had recovered from giving away a first-half goal and looked headed toward a 2-1 victory until goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was sent off in the 79th minute for fouling Hirving Lozano, who had earlier capitalized on a mistake by Toby Alderweireld to put PSV ahead.

Christian Eriksen, making his first start after a month out with an abdominal injury, was involved in the buildup for Lucas Moura’s equalizer and set up Harry Kane for Spurs’ second.

The shared points were the first for both teams in Group B following defeats to Inter Milan and Barcelona, who were playing each other later Wednesday.

After Kane put Spurs ahead, the visitors looked in control until referee Slavko Vincic showed Lloris a straight red for charging out of his penalty area and bringing down Lozano, who had broken through the Tottenham defence.

Substitute keeper Michel Vorm did well to save the resulting free kick with his first touch of the ball, but he stood no chance in the 87th minute when De Jong turned in the equalizer from close range.

Both sides badly needed a win after losing their first two matches and it was reflected in a fast, open match.

Mexico striker Lozano put PSV in front on the half hour — with a big assist from Alderweireld, who first lost the ball and then deflected Lozano’s shot into the net. But, just as against Inter Milan two weeks ago when it lost 2-1, Mark van Bommel’s team could not protect its lead.

Davinson Sanchez thought he had levelled just four minutes later, but his effort was ruled out for offside. Instead, Lucas Moura scored the equalizer in the 39th with another deflected effort. Eriksen slid a diagonal ball through the PSV defence for Kieran Trippier, who cut the ball back for Moura to finish.

Eriksen got an assist on Kane’s goal in the 55th minute, crossing from the left for the England forward to head home. Kane could have had a brace, but he headed against the bar with the match still goalless. Substitute Erik Lamela also hit the woodwork, as did Gaston Pereira for PSV.

PSV, the 1988 European champion and perfect so far this season in the Dutch Eredivisie, has failed to win any of its Champions League matches this this year, following a winless campaign last season.

Both sides had to make changes for the match at PSV Stadium. Spurs were missing the injured Dele Ali, Danny Rose and Jan Vertonghen. PSV brought in winger Donyell Malen for the injured Steven Bergwijn.

It was the man returning from injury, Eriksen, who starred for Spurs, but ultimately he had to be satisfied with a draw.

Club Brugge holds Monaco to draw in Champions League

BRUGES, Belgium — Thierry Henry failed to get a winning start to his Champions League career as a coach when Club Brugge kept his Monaco to a 1-1 draw, which reduced both teams’ chances of advancing from Group A.

Henry did at least halt Monaco’s run of losses at five, but the draw leaves both teams with just one point from three games. Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid both had six points already ahead of their meeting later Wednesday.

Henry got the breakthrough he wanted when Moussa Sylla ran onto a deep ball in the 35th minute and chipped it over the onrushing goalie Karlo Letica for the opener.

But the turning point came three minutes later when Sylla had a chance to double the lead as he only had to put the ball into an empty net after swerving past Letica, but the 18-year-old could not convert.

Instead, Brugge scored one minute later when Wesley Moraes headed home a cross from midfield dynamo Hans Vanaken.

Suddenly the game was open again and both sides went for the winner in the second half, knowing that three points were needed to boost their chances of reaching knockout stage.

Henry has fond memories of the Jan Breydel Stadium, where he scored two goals in as many matches during France’s run to the Euro 2000 title, but he had to leave without a victory on Wednesday.
